MARTIN COUNTY, FLORIDA: A 60-year-old man from Florida has been arrested for allegedly shooting his girlfriend and her adult daughter during an argument in their home in Martin County, as per reports

Shaun Dougherty faces two counts of attempted murder following the double shooting on Thursday night, December 21.

Dougherty shot his girlfriend after she refused to have sex with him

Authorities said that the defendant was highly intoxicated when he arrived at his home, located in a gated community off Greenwood Way in Palm City, according to a sheriff’s office press statement and a report from West Palm Beach NBC affiliate WPTV.

Reports reveal Dougherty began to argue with his girlfriend over their relationship. When he insisted on having sex, she turned him down. As she attempted to flee, Dougherty allegedly shot her in the leg and later in the neck.

According to the sheriff's office, the woman's adult daughter was also shot by Dougherty as she attempted to flee the house after hearing the gunshots.

"Both women made it outside to a neighbors and called 911,” deputies said and added, “MCSO SWAT Team was called out and surrounded the home, forcing Dougherty out. He was taken into custody. Both victims were transported to the hospital and are expected to recover.”

Neighbor heard 'four loud bangs'

William Wagner, a neighbor, described hearing “four loud bangs,” according to WPTV. Believing this to be fireworks at first, he looked out his window.

He said, “Then I started hearing people yelling in agony,” adding, “Then I heard them yell, ‘Call the cops'."

Another neighbor, Les Frost, reportedly described getting a knock on the door seconds after the shooting. He said, "It was Dougherty’s girlfriend. We heard the banging on the door. I answered the door, and the woman was there. She was all covered in blood, and she said she was shot.”

Frost said he and his wife rushed to help the 65-year-old victim.

According to reports, he called 911 and worried that the woman might not survive. However, the daughter, who was shot in the arm, told WPTV that her mother survived the gunshots to the chest, neck, and arm.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office informed that the women are expected to make a full recovery.
