EVERETT, WASHINGTON: A mother from Washington state was accused of killing her 4-year-old son brutally by stabbing him 41 times, according to court documents.

Janet Garcia, 27, was charged with first-degree murder on Friday, April 19, in relation to her son Ariel Garcia's death on March 27 in Everett, Washington.

Although the charging documents initially listed 16 "sharp force wounds," an autopsy revealed there were 41.

Ariel Garcia was found dead with 41 stab wounds

During Garcia's arraignment on Monday, April 22, prosecutors argued that the number of stab wounds showed the attack on Ariel was "prolonged," as reported by the Everett Herald.

An autopsy revealed that Ariel died from "homicidal violence." The charging documents state that Garcia relapsed on methamphetamine. After discovering a bloodstain in their apartment on March 27, Garcia's roommate called the neighborhood police, Fox News Digital reported.

Following an endangered missing person alert from the Everett Police Department in the early hours of March 28, several hours after Ariel was last seen, about 100 officers, agents and investigators from various jurisdictions, including the FBI, took part in a regional search effort for Ariel.

According to the documents, Ariel was found dead with 41 stab wounds close to the side of highway Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM). Surveillance footage from March 27, showed Garcia's Nissan stopped along the road near Joint Base Lewis-McChord around 1.42 pm. The defendant was then seen getting down from the car carrying a blanket-wrapped, "toddler-sized object."

A few days before the 4-year-old's horrific murder, the child's grandmother filed for "emergency minor guardianship," claiming the child's mother had "a long history of alcohol and substance abuse that has gotten worse in the last few months."

Janet Garcia is currently on a $3 million bond at Snohomish County Jail

According to court records the station was able to obtain, Garcia's mother, Ariel's grandmother, and she had been fighting via text over Garcia's inability to spend time with her children.

Ariel's grandmother also asked for emergency custody of Garcia's other child, Ariel's 7-year-old half-brother, on the same day that Ariel was reported missing.

During the investigation, family members claimed that Garcia was "physically and verbally aggressive" toward her two small children, according to the charge papers.

According to court documents, the 7-year-old told investigators that Garcia had been "hurting him a lot" and that she was "too aggressive with him" after his mother's arrest.

The child claimed his head hurt from his mother's treatment, saying she choked him and dragged him down the stairs. Garcia is still being held on a $3 million bond at the Snohomish County Jail. She could spend the rest of her life behind bars if found guilty.

“I am completely heartbroken for the family and friends of Ariel Garcia and they will remain in my thoughts as they grieve this unbelievably tragic loss,” said Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin in a statement.
