MIAMI, FLORIDA: The victims of a double murder in Miami over the weekend have been identified as former college hockey players from New York and Massachusetts who were inseparable.
Police reported that Sidney Capolino, 23, from Pawling, New York, and Meghan Moore, 25, from Centerville, Massachusetts, who were roommates, were shot by Moore's enraged former boyfriend at their apartment complex.
Notably, Luis Nopales was a 40-year-old restaurant worker who turned the gun on himself. It is worth mentioning that they all lived together in the apartment, according to the New York Post.
What happened at the crime scene?
Miami Dade Police received a call at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024, reporting gunshots at the girls' apartment complex in Coral Gables.
Responding officers arrived at the Windsor Ludlam Trail Apartments around 9 p.m. and found Meghan outside the apartment with a gunshot wound. While attending to her injuries, officers heard another gunshot from inside the condominium.
The complex was evacuated, and the MDPD's SWAT team entered the building. Inside, they discovered Sidney with a gunshot wound and Nopales with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
All three individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Sidney Capolina and Meghan Moore's loved ones express sorrow
Capolino and Moore were teammates on the ice hockey team at New England College in New Hampshire.
Dr Wayne F Lesperance Jr, the school president, expressed deep sadness in a statement, stating, "Meghan and Sidney were known to many on campus, and we are deeply saddened by this devastating news. We are keeping Sidney and Meghan’s families and friends in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."
The school confirmed that Moore graduated in 2021 and Capolino in 2022. When contacted by phone on Tuesday, a relative of Moore expressed shock, saying, "I can't speak right now. We're just shocked."
A college friend of Moore revealed that she and Nopales had a tumultuous relationship. "You could tell that there were some issues there," she remarked. "But not to this point. We can’t believe this happened."
According to records, Nopales was evicted from a Coral Gables apartment in late 2023 due to non-payment. In a letter to the court, he explained that he couldn't afford the $2,300 monthly rent after losing his job at a restaurant.
Nopales mentioned securing a new job and promised to settle the debt soon, but he was ultimately forced out of the apartment.
Police have yet to disclose an official motive for the murders.
