NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: During the first day of his trial in Manhattan, there were reports that Donald Trump had fallen asleep, leading Chris Hayes to ponder the nickname the former president uses for President Joe Biden.

The process of selecting the jury began on April 15 for a trial that is crucial in determining Trump's involvement in allegations of falsifying business records to conceal payments related to extramarital affairs before the 2016 election.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to all 34 charges brought against him.

Trump's drowsiness in court sparks commentary from Chris Hayes

Maggie Haberman, a correspondent for The New York Times, who was present in the courtroom, observed Trump appearing to be asleep during the proceedings.

“Trump appears to be sleeping. His head keeps dropping down and his mouth goes slack,” she remarked. Following this observation, Trump cast a disapproving glance at Haberman as he left the courtroom.

Hayes described Trump's persistent closing of his eyes as "sustained eye-resting."

"I do feel like if you call your opponent ‘Sleepy Joe,’ you have one job for the rest of the campaign," he remarked. "You gotta like, Clockwork Orange those puppies open at all times."

Hayes also observed that Trump's typical sense of control has been unsettled by his role as a defendant in a criminal trial.

“I really can’t think of a thing that’s more nightmarish in some ways for him at a personal level,” he continued.

He then added, “You don’t have the stimulus, you’re not getting ego bumps from some social media replies. And you just gotta sit there and watch this day after day. I mean this was day one. This is weeks and weeks of this. So just at the most sort of human level, I was just watching the reports today and thinking about just the sheer psychological torture."

Social media compares Trump to three of the seven Dwarfs

Hayes' comments regarding Trump received widespread agreement and approval on social media.

One viewer said, "JUST LOCK HIM UP ALREADY!"

Another person hilariously wrote, "Trump was playing 3 of the seven dwarves…Dopey, Grumpy, and Sleepy."

"He fell asleep because he was coming down...the bags under his eyes are enormous," said another viewer.

"Wow, he doesn't look well," another viewer observed.

One more person added, "I think he was medicated to calm down and shut up. Besides that, he looked like he hadn't slept the night before..."

Another viewer echoed a similar sentiment, "That thug monster was up all night on 'truth social' scared out his mind!!!"

"Sleepy don," commented another.
