NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump is once again attempting to delay the upcoming New York hush-money trial, which is scheduled to begin on March 25.

According to a CNN report, the ex-president's lawyers filed a motion to the Supreme Court of New York to delay the trial until the US Supreme Court gives a final verdict on Trump's presidential immunity arguments.

"President Trump respectfully submits that an adjournment of the trial is appropriate to await further guidance from the Supreme Court, which should facilitate the appropriate application of the presidential immunity doctrine in this case to the evidence the People intend to offer at trial," the motion to NY SC Judge Juan Merchan read.

In February, the SCOTUS decided to hear Trump's immunity claims in the week of April 22 after two lower courts refused to grant him the same. The final ruling is expected to come only by late June or July when the court term ends.

The hush-money case is the first of his four criminal indictments to go to trial. He faces 34 counts for falsifying business records related to payments made through Michael Cohen to silence adult film actress Stormy Daniels about an alleged affair before the 2016 election. Denying the affair, Trump has pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges.

Trump's lawyers ask court to exclude new evidence from prosecutor

Trump's decision to seek a delay in the hush-money trial stemmed from the prosecutor's decision to include his public statement and Twitter (now X) posts he made in 2018 while in office.

However, the ex-president's attorneys filing argued that they were not adequately notified about the extent of the evidence.

Reiterating Trump's defense of his actions while in office claiming absolute presidential immunity, the lawyers said his statement about Daniels and payment to Cohen should also be avoided, considering he was president at the time.

"While the concept of presidential immunity is firmly established, the doctrine's scope presents a 'serious and unsettled question of law.' Therefore, the court should adjourn the trial until the Supreme Court resolves Trump v United States for several reasons," Trump's motion states.

"Waiting to try the case until after the Supreme Court addresses the question before it – following oral argument just next month – will likely simplify the application of the defense to evidentiary issues raised by the People's motions in limine."

Trump, in February, made a failed request to postpone the hush-money trial, claiming it would interfere with his 2024 presidential campaign. And recently, he requested the court to block the key witnesses Daniels and Cohen from testifying, citing they might provide false evidence.

Internet reacts

Outraged at Trump's never-ending attempt to postpone the criminal trial, netizens criticized Trump, accusing him of running away from accountability.

One user said, "Nice try. Stop your whining and face the music."

"His abuse of the courts is criminal!" another user stated.

A third user remarked, "Now Trump wants total immunity BEFORE, DURING & AFTER his Presidency. He should get NO immunity for criminal acts regardless of when he committed the crimes."

"End all of his attempts at delaying trials. He is still JUST A CITIZEN!" a fourth response read.

A fifth user wrote, "For someone who routinely claims innocence, he sure doesn’t want to prove it in court."

"He is just trying to escape accountability AGAIN!!!! 77 years old and never faced accountability!!!!!!" added someone else.
