MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump presented a bizarre legal theory during a media address at the New York state courthouse, ahead of the judge's approval for his hush-money trial to commence next month.

Based on a report by HuffPost, Trump claimed "virtually every legal scholar says they don't understand" the charges against him in the hush money case.

Then came the bizarre statement referring to himself, "Even if he was guilty of something, there is no crime."

The Republican frontrunner is indicted for allegedly falsifying business records for hush-money payments in 2016 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to keep silent about his extramarital affair with her.

Judge Juan Manuel Merchan, on Thursday, February 15, denied Trump's motion to dismiss the case and scheduled the trial date to start on March 25.

Donald Trump alleges trial timing linked to his presidential race lead

According to a YouTube video clip of Trump addressing the media in the New York Post, the ex-president multiple times stated "there was no crime" to the hush money case.

"This is just a way of hurting me in the election because I'm leading by a lot. We're leading by numbers that nobody's ever seen before," the White House hopeful argued.

Trump further claimed the case against him was a "down and dirty" way of "cheating" him that "no country does other than a third world country of Banana Republic."

"They want to rush it because they want to get it desperately before the election. That goes before the election. That's what they want to do. They don't care after the election," he said.

Doubling down on his arguments, Trump added that the case would not have been brought up if he performed poorly at the polls. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that Trump had 37% voter support, whereas Biden stood at 34%.

"How can you run for election to be sitting in a courthouse in Manhattan all day long? I'm supposed to be in South Carolina right now where other people are and where," Trump added.

Despite the legal battles, the former president has won all the GOP primaries and caucuses held to date as he closes in on grabbing the party nomination to face President Joe Biden for a potential rematch in November.
