AUSTIN, TEXAS: On Thursday, January 18, Republican Senator Ted Cruz called out Democratic Senator Roland Gutierrez for his tweet alleging that he’s responsible for ordinary Americans living in a “broken state,” “a personal hell.”

In his tweet from January 13, Sen Gutierrez posted a link to an article describing the plight of migrants who drowned in the Rio Grande River, trying to cross the border and into the United States by saying, “We are living in a broken state. A personal hell brought to you by Texas Republicans whose solution is to let people die rather than fix the systems meant to keep us safe. Ted Cruz and every single elected Republican who uses Border antics to fuel facism must be held accountable.”

Cruz fired back in his tweet by saying, “It’s an odd strategy, running for Senate in Texas, to denounce our state as “a broken state” and “a personal hell”….”

Gutierrez will be running against current US Senator Republican Ted Cruz in the 2024 election.

What is the field of opponents looking like for Cruz in 2024?

Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez began his 2024 US Senate campaign, representing towns and cities from Seguin to Uvalde.

A Democrat from San Antonio, Gutierrez revealed that he chose to run for the Senate due to the 2022 Uvalde shooting incident and the need for gun control in Texas.

Gutierrez also aims to prepare for another freeze by tying on to eastern and western grids in the state and has pledged to prioritize reproductive choice and ‘Medicare for All’ if elected, according to Kris 6 News.

However, Gutierrez faces an uphill battle trying to dethrone Sen Ted Cruz this year, as Democrat Rep Colin Allred adopted a nonconforming stance by voting to condemn President Joe Biden’s handling of the southern border on Wednesday, January 17.

The resolution "denounces the Biden administration's open-borders policies" and "condemns the national security and public safety crisis" that Republicans accuse the current administration of creating at the border, per a report by the Texas Tribune.

Allred's vote received condemnation from both political parties, as State Sen Roland Gutierrez, who is running against Allred for the Democratic nomination for the United States Senate, slammed Allred's vote, claiming he "sided with GOP extremists."

Gutierrez said in a statement, “The Democratic nominee that goes up against Ted Cruz should fight tooth and nail against Trump’s dangerous so-called policies. If our nominee agrees with Trump and Ted Cruz's idea of border security then we're in a hell of a lot of trouble.”

The US border issue has established itself as one of the most significant Republican grounds for attack or criticism against Democrats.

Senator Ted Cruz frequently criticizes the Biden administration and Democrats for the high number of migrants entering the nation, as well as the rise of human trafficking and drug gangs.

Despite his Wednesday vote, Allred has highlighted that he views Republicans' border plans as overly harsh and theatrical.

“I have long said we need comprehensive reform. But now more than ever, extreme politicians need to stop their political stunts and come to the table to form a real, bipartisan solution,” Allred said in a statement last week slamming both Cruz and Gov Greg Abbott. “That is something Ted Cruz has no interest in and something I will do as Senator.”

According to a recent poll conducted by Emerson College Polling in collaboration with Nexstar Media, a significant percentage of Democratic Primary voters in Texas have expressed their intention to support Rep Colin Allred in the upcoming general election to face Republican Senator Ted Cruz.

Specifically, 29% of the voters have pledged their support to Allred, while State Senator Roland Gutierrez and Nueces County District Attorney Mark Gonzalez have received 7% and 6% of the votes, respectively.

Notably, the majority of voters, ie, 37%, remain undecided ahead of the March primary.

The poll results also indicate that hypothetical general election matchups between Allred and Cruz, as well as Gutierrez and Cruz, are in statistical ties.

In a head-to-head matchup between Cruz and Allred, 42% of the voters support Cruz, while 40% back Allred.

Meanwhile, 41% of the voters support Cruz, and 40% support Gutierrez in a similar matchup.

In both scenarios, 8% of the voters have expressed their support for someone else, and 11% remain undecided.

Internet blasts Cruz for hypocrisy

People on X trolled the Texas Republican for his hypocritical tweet, reminding him that he's akin to using the same language when attacking Democrats.

One X user remarked, "The tale of two faced ted."

Another user quipped, "Only Republicans are allowed to use that argument, nobody else."

Someone else said, "Hypocrisy knows no bounds inside the GOP… govt of propaganda."

"How many of these problems has Cruz solved since being in office?" one user asked.

Another remarked, "Well, gee, Ted, you talk about our country like that and yet here you are, a senator."

A tweet read, "Hypocrisy has long been a Ted Cruz trait. He has never demonstrated any backbone or moral integrity."
