WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), emphasizing the significance of making sure the September 10 debate happens, pleaded with former president Donald Trump to recognize any rule modifications Vice President Kamala Harris' team suggests for the next ABC News debate.

In a Monday night, August 26, interview, Cruz refuted Fox News anchor Sean Hannity's suggestion that Trump should not "give in" to the Harris campaign's requests to modify the parameters of the upcoming presidential debate.

Ted Cruz asserts Donald Trump needs to debate

Ted Cruz argued that Donald Trump should participate in the debate despite the senator and Sean Hannity believing that ABC News would be biased against the Republican nominee.

“Sean, I think Trump needs to do the debate,” Cruz said, according to The Hill. “And frankly, I think he should agree to whatever stupid rules they want. It’s going to be hostile and rigged regardless.”

“Kamala wants to pick this fight to have an excuse to get out of the debate. Don’t let her out of the debate,” he later added. “We need her there, because without a debate, her campaign will never answer a single question between now and Election Day, and that’s their only hope of winning: is focus on joy and hopey, changey stuff and not her disastrous record.”

Questions swirl about upcoming Donald Trump v Kamala Harris debate

Recent days have seen concerns about whether the scheduled ABC News presidential debate will go forward as the camps of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have clashed over regulations for muting microphones.

The regulations were first agreed when President Joe Biden was leading the Democratic ticket, prior to his appalling performance in the first debate, which some commentators claim was exacerbated by the muffled microphones. They said that if the microphones hadn't been muted, the former president could have come across as less composed in his remarks, and Biden might not have rambled on for as long.

Kamala Harris’ campaign now pushes against mic-mute rule

Currently, Kamala Harris' campaign is advocating against silenced microphones. Donald Trump claimed on Monday that he didn't care if the mics were muted, but he still questioned if he would take part and criticized ABC News.

Cruz did not waver in the face of Hannity's suggestion that the GOP nominee argue that the rules are predetermined and that Harris either "walk away and hide" or "accept a debate that you agreed to." “Don’t you think she ends up looking bad on that?” Hannity asked.

“Yeah, but you know what? I think she’d be happy to walk away from that,” Cruz said, adding that he would advise Trump to tell the Harris campaign to “come up with whatever stupid rules you want.”

“If you want her to wear a cheese head while she’s debating, you want the mics hot or not, you want her to have an encyclopedia of talking points in front of her, I don’t care,” he continued. “I want to stand up directly and contrast her record and mine, because on every front, Donald Trump’s record, we had success in this country.”

Kamala Harris slammed for changing rules of upcoming debate with Donald Trump

Netizens lashed out at the Democratic presidential nominee for advocating against silenced microphones.

One X user tweeted, "She wants to bring notes….this is ridiculous." Another added, "If she hasn’t practiced her debate skills since her last run at #POTUS, it doesn’t matter what restrictions or rules they put in place. The outcome will still be the same as 4 years ago, when @TulsiGabbard got her to drop from the #DNC primaries."

"Rule number 1 for Trump if kamala had her way... don't speak. Lol that's the kind of 'debate' she would loooove," remarked one, while someone else wrote, "No. She should not be allowed a cheat sheet."
