WASHINGTON, DC: Republican Ted Cruz forcefully accused Democratic colleagues of trying to turn a Senate briefing on Operation Epic Fury into a political spectacle rather than a serious discussion about America’s military action against Iran.

Cruz’s comments came after a Senate briefing on the ongoing US-led military campaign against Iran, which has sparked sharp debate in Washington.

The operation, launched by the United States and Israel, is aimed at degrading Iran’s military capabilities and leadership following weeks of rising tensions.

At the heart of Cruz’s remarks was strong frustration at what he saw as partisan attacks during a briefing intended to update lawmakers on the military campaign.

“Every single Democrat, their questions were just attacking the operation,” Cruz said, suggesting that Democratic senators focused more on criticism than on seeking facts.

He added, “It is amazing to see Democrats lineup to effectively defend the Ayatollah,” a sharp rebuke of his colleagues’ line of questioning.

Operation Epic Fury - a major strike campaign designed to target Iran’s missile systems, military infrastructure and leadership - has prompted a wide range of reactions in Congress, from full support to calls for restraint and oversight.

For Cruz, the briefing should have focused on military strategy and the national security implications. Instead, he argued, it had become a “circus” of partisan criticism.

Ted Cruz calls Epic Fury most consequential presidential decision

Throughout the session, Cruz repeatedly emphasised the gravity of the situation and the need for unified focus in Congress.

“The President's decision to launch this military action was the single most consequential decision of his presidency,” Cruz said, highlighting his view that the strikes were necessary to protect American interests and deter further threats.

While many Republicans have rallied behind the move, framing it as a decisive defense against Iran’s growing capabilities, many Democrats have raised constitutional and strategic concerns, with some calling for a formal war powers vote.

Democratic backlash and contrasting views on Iran

Not all senators shared Cruz’s perspective. In response to the same briefing, Senate Democrats like Ed Markey called Trump’s actions “an illegal war” and criticized the administration for lacking a clear plan to end it.

“I just left the classified briefing on Iran. And it only confirmed what we already knew: Donald Trump is waging an illegal war and he has no plan to end it,” Markey said, encapsulating the view of many in his caucus.
