HOUSTON, TEXAS: A surprise appearance by a massive African elephant at the Texas Republican Party convention took an unexpected turn on Friday, June 12, when the animal relieved itself in the middle of the assembly hall, leaving delegates, reporters, and attendees stunned.

The incident occurred shortly after Governor Greg Abbott finished delivering his keynote address at the GOP convention in Houston. Organizers had teased attendees with a "larger-than-life surprise," which turned out to be Paige, a 9-foot-tall, nearly 9,000-pound African elephant.

Draped in red, white, and blue decorations and wearing a banner featuring Abbott's campaign slogan, "Unity Drives Victory," Paige made her way through the convention floor accompanied by handlers.

Paige the elephant leaves convention-goers stunned

As Paige walked through an aisle separating the press area and state delegates, she suddenly stopped and began urinating on the convention floor.

According to reporters who shared videos of the moment on social media, a shocked attendee could be heard exclaiming, "Oh, shoot!" as Brooks & Dunn's 'Only in America' played in the background.

The elephant appeared completely unfazed by the commotion and continued on her way once she was done.

An adult African elephant can release up to three gallons of urine in a single session, and several observers suggested the amount left behind looked close to that figure.

Organizers had warned attendees before the surprise entrance

Before Paige entered the hall, convention organizers displayed a "Texas-sized heads-up" on screens throughout the venue.

The message advised attendees to "stay aware of your surroundings" and "keep aisles clear."

The warning took on new meaning after the incident quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the convention.

Texas Monthly writer Robert Downen summed up the aftermath with an observation, saying, "It smells like pee in here."

Paige's appearance overshadows Greg Abbott's policy-focused keynote

Paige, who lives at the East Texas Elephant Experience in Cut & Shoot, Texas, was brought to the United States in the mid-1980s as an orphan, according to her biography.

She is the largest of the facility's three elephants.

Her appearance came immediately after Abbott outlined several policy priorities during his speech, including support for closed primaries, a ban on taxpayer-funded lobbying, lower property taxes, regulation of data centers, and a tougher approach to immigration.

But despite the governor's policy agenda, much of the attention following the speech shifted to Paige's unexpected stop in the convention aisle, which ended up becoming one of the convention's most viral and unforgettable moments.
