Tiger Woods fans wear T-shirts with mugshot and '#FreeTiger' after DUI arrest at Houston Open
HOUSTON, TEXAS: The 15-time major champion Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover crash on Friday, March 27, and subsequently arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI).
To show support in a slightly different way, his fans turned up at the 2026 Houston Open on Saturday wearing T-shirts featuring his mugshot and the hashtag "#FreeTiger." The mugshot, showing him in a blue shirt with visible swelling and bloodshot eyes, circulated widely after it was released by the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
After his first DUI arrest in 2017, fans also put his mugshot on shirts and displayed it on signs at PGA Tour events. It was reported as a case of driving under the influence of prescription medication, not alcohol.
Tiger Woods gets into rollover crash
The incident took place shortly before 2 pm on Friday in Jupiter Island, Florida. As per the authorities, Woods was driving at a high speed when his dark Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled onto its side. Reports confirm that neither Woods nor the other individual involved in the crash was hurt.
Images from the scene showed Woods’ Land Rover flipped onto its side. Still, reports suggest he remained in stable condition after the collision near his home. He was also seen standing by a fire hydrant while using his phone.
During a press briefing, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek described what responders found: “The Jupiter Island Police Department responded out there and found a pickup truck pulling a pressure cleaner, and a Land Rover, which was rolled over on the driver's door.”
He added that the driver of the overturned vehicle “was able to crawl out of the passenger door of the car and was identified to be Mr Tiger Woods.”
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek on Tiger Woods' crash and DUI charge
Authorities stated that Woods showed signs of impairment during the incident. A breathalyzer test returned a “triple-zero” result, meaning no alcohol was detected, but he refused to take a urinalysis test.
Budensiek explained that officers at the scene carried out several roadside tests. They also took into account Woods’ past injuries and surgeries while evaluating his condition, as the sheriff noted, "Of course, he did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had. We did take that into account." However, based on their observations, they still believed he showed signs of impairment.
Budensiek added that they were not initially suspicious of alcohol, and this was confirmed later in jail. Woods was arrested and charged with DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He was released on bail late Friday night.
Even President Donald Trump shared his concern, saying, “I feel very badly for him. He’s having some difficulties. There was an accident, and that’s all I know. He is a very close friend of mine, an amazing person, but he’s going through a tough time.”
