WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Tim Kaine said there’s an important takeaway from Donald Trump removing Pam Bondi as attorney general. Speaking on 'Meet the Press' on Sunday, April 5, he stressed that the attorney general should act as the country’s top law enforcement official, with independence, credibility, and strong moral authority.

He argued that Bondi compromised her own principles, suggesting she lost the ability to uphold the standards expected of someone in that role. Bondi was removed from her position on April 2, 2026, when Trump announced her dismissal.

Tim Kaine criticizes Pam Bondi for ‘selling out her integrity'

During the interview on NBC, Kaine said that Bondi “threw all that away, and she still got fired,” adding, “So look. You can either go in as an attorney general and stand up for the rule of law, and you may make Donald Trump mad. Or you can go in and try to just do everything the president wants, and you’re (still) going to make him mad.”

“And she still got sacked,” he added. “That should be a lesson to whoever is the next nominee for AG. Be the nation’s chief law enforcement officer, and don’t let the president cause you to trim your conscience or become a toady.”

The Virginia senator made these remarks after Welker asked whether he would consider supporting Trump’s next pick for attorney general. His comments come despite the fact that he previously voted in favor of Noem for DHS secretary, another official who was later dismissed.

“I never start off as an automatic no,” Kaine responded. “We’ll see who the president proposes. If you get elected as president, I think that should carry a mandate to put in an executive team. If somebody is not qualified or has [a] lack of character, I’ll vote no. But I never start off as a no.”

Pam Bondi’s exit came after months of strained ties with Trump

Trump announced Bondi’s removal after multiple outlets had already reported that she had been fired. A report by The Wall Street Journal revealed details about how the decision played out.

According to the report, Trump told Bondi she was being dismissed during a two-mile ride in his presidential limousine, using just four words. “I think it’s time,” Trump said, Bondi later recalled to an associate.

After arriving at court, the two briefly sat next to each other before Trump abruptly moved seats. The Journal also noted that Bondi had been on shaky ground with Trump since at least January, with the final decision coming earlier that same week.

According to The New York Times, Bondi asked if she could remain in the role until the summer, but Trump refused. Her firing was reportedly tied to her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, as well as her failure to take action against Trump’s political opponents.
