LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Timothée Chalamet was captured on camera laughing at the 2026 Oscars after host Conan O'Brien made a joke about his recent ballet-opera comment.
The actor’s reaction follows weeks of intense public backlash after a town hall interview in which he suggested that classical performing arts are no longer significant.

Timothée Chalamet and his partner, Kylie Jenner, were both seen laughing at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15, after host Conan O’Brien teased the actor’s recent comments on ballet and opera.
While discussing the heavy security at the event, O'Brien made a joke directed at the actor.
"Security is extremely tight tonight. Just gotta mention that," O’Brien told the crowd, before adding, "I'm told there's concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities."
O’Brien continued the joke by looking directly at the ‘Marty Supreme’ star and saying, "They're just mad you left out jazz!"
The comments that started the trouble
The controversy began during a town hall discussion when Chalamet dismissed the importance of classical arts.
"I don't want to be working in ballet or opera, or, you know, things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive,' even though it's like, no one cares about this anymore," Chalamet said as the audience laughed.
Although he tried to be funny by saying, "All respect to the ballet and opera people out there," he admitted he was causing trouble for himself, quipping, "I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason."

The backlash was especially sharp because of Chalamet’s personal ties to the world he dismissed.
Critics, including the cohosts of ‘The View,’ quickly pointed out that the actor’s grandmother, mother, and sister were all members of the New York City Ballet.
Famous ballerina Misty Copeland also spoke out, saying Chalamet "wouldn't be an actor" without the influence of these art forms.
Other stars, such as, Steven Spielberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, and even singer Andrea Bocelli, joined the conversation, showing that many people still care deeply about the arts.
