COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA: A top aide to Rep Nancy Mace has abruptly resigned, publicly accusing her of betraying the core of the conservative movement.
The departure has brought into sharp relief internal tensions within her campaign and the broader Republican coalition over her political direction and alliances.
Austin McCubbin speaks out against Nancy Mace
On Monday, December 01, campaign consultant Austin McCubbin announced his resignation from Mace’s campaign for South Carolina governor in a dramatic post on X.
He declared that Mace had “decided to turn her back on MAGA to hug the political cactus that is the Rand Paul + Thomas Massie wing of the Party.”
Citing this as the reason, he said, "I have notified her and her team that I am resigning because of this."
McCubbin asserted that Mace had directed a friend to send a “7‑figure check” to a PAC aligned with Paul, a move he considered a betrayal of Trump-aligned Republicans.
Repeatedly emphasizing his “loyalty” to Trump, he argued that she was acting as “wittingly or unwittingly a proxy for Rand Paul’s 2028 presidential campaign.”
Beyond ideological concerns, McCubbin also raised issues of compensation and respect.
He claimed his “Team Trump status” had been exploited, that the campaign failed to honour payment agreements.
He also said his political advice was dismissed “She wouldn’t hear it when I warned her about the political risks and offered alternative solutions. She accused me of mansplaining, a woke term used by people who hate men, who ironically are her best demographic. That dog don’t hunt.”
McCubbin urged supporters especially Trump loyalists to reject Mace and instructing them to “scratch her name from the list.”
Nancy Mace's reaction to the resignation
In response, a spokesperson for Mace’s campaign dismissed McCubbin’s claims, according to Politico.
They said, “Mr McCubbin didn’t raise a dime for the campaign or better yet, never even bothered showing up. When he demanded $10,000 a month for ‘services’ and was told no, he ran straight to X. Good luck with that.”
The feeling when a political "consultant" demands $10k per month to give you bad advice you'll never use... and they cry on social media when you turn them down...

Mace herself responded on X with sarcasm.
She posted “The feeling when a political ‘consultant’ demands $10k per month to give you bad advice you’ll never use... and they cry on social media when you turn them down...” alongside a GIF of 'Goodfellas' character Henry Hill laughing hysterically.
Despite the rift, Nancy Mace continues to publicly align herself with Trump’s base and remains a candidate in the South Carolina governor’s race.
Her former aide McCubbin, had previously managed her first reelection campaign in 2022.
