WOODSTOCK, ALABAMA: Tyler Goodson, the 32-year-old who featured in the popular 'S-Town' podcast series, died after a standoff with law enforcement officials at his home, authorities stated on November 4.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, officers responding to a midnight call found Goodson barricaded inside his house. A standoff followed between the two parties, during which Goodson reportedly "brandished a gun at officers." He was shot and later pronounced dead.

It is not clear who shot Goodson, reported The New York Times. Additional details about the standoff and the shooting are yet to be disclosed.

The shooting is currently under investigation, and the agency stated that the findings would be turned over to the local authorities.

Woodstock mayor addresses the death of Tyler Goodson

Mayor Jeff Dodson told WVTM-TV that it was "the worst day in office I've ever had." He said that he had known the deceased's family for more than three decades, which made the situation even more difficult for him.

In a statement released on November 4, Dodson stated that “everyone wants answers and details, myself included.”

“Tyler was well known and loved by myself, his family, and this community. That love extends far beyond due to the S-Town podcast. Please remember at this time that he is so much more than a character to the fans who loved him. This young man was a father, son, brother, and friend to many,” read the statement.

Tyler Goodson's appearance in 'S-Town'

Released in 2017, the instant hit podcast followed a man named John B McLemore who hated his hometown of Woodstock and reached out to Brian Reed, a producer at 'This American Life,' to help him investigate the son of a rich family who claimed to have gotten away with murder.

Goodson was close friends with McLemore and featured prominently in the series. In episode 3, Goodson said of the latter, "He’s just about the only daddy I’ve got."

Listeners discovered that McLemore committed suicide by drinking cyanide. He had intended to leave his belongings to Goodson but did not leave a legal will behind. Goodson was thus later charged for stealing items he claimed were his from the McLemore property.

The podcast has been the winner of a Peabody Award.
