Trevor Weigel: Man arrested for fatally stabbing ex in front of cop, tries to kill himself while fleeing
MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA: A Pennsylvania man was arrested after authorities accused him of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in front of a police officer who responded to the victim’s home on Friday, February 16.
23-year-old Trevor C Weigel has been charged with criminal homicide, burglary, possession of an instrument of crime, disorderly conduct and harassment in connection with the death of 19-year-old Jaden Battista, according to a press release shared by the Bucks County District Attorney's Office.
What did Trevor Weigel do?
Lower Makefield Township police were called to Battista’s Yardley home on Friday afternoon on a report of a domestic-related burglary, authorities said.
A man later identified as Weigel was seen standing next to a red Ford Mustang with the passenger door open when the first officer arrived. According to reports, the officer witnessed Weigel pursue Battista, tackle her to the ground, and stab her in the upper part of the body many times.
Following that, while fleeing, Weigel, allegedly stabbed himself in the neck, per the release.
While the first officer tended to Battista, a second officer eventually caught up to Weigel along Interstate 295, deployed a Taser device and took the suspect into custody, authorities said.
Later, Battista died in the hospital from the multiple stab wounds to her neck and chest, according to an autopsy that was conducted the following day.
Why did the accused kill Battista?
According to an affidavit of probable cause reviewed by People, police body camera footage taken during Weigel’s arrest appears to show him accusing Battista of cheating on him and admitting he “lost it.”
After being arrested, Weigel was transported to the hospital, where he had surgery to treat his wounds. Additionally, a bloody knife was found at the site. According to the complaint, investigators discovered that around 2.15 pm on Friday, Battista was on FaceTime with a friend when she allegedly told the friend that Weigel, her ex-boyfriend, had unexpectedly showed up at her house and was trying to break in.
While speaking with Battista, the friend heard her say that Weigel was able to get into the house through a first-floor window, according to the affidavit.
The friend reports hearing a disturbance, a thump, then Battista's voice becoming muffled, as if someone was covering her mouth to stop her from speaking. The friend tried to call back multiple times after the call ended, but the calls were not returned, according to the authorities. As of now, Weigel is being held without being granted bail, as stated by the Bucks County District Attorney's Office. It's unknown if he has pled guilty or hired a representative to speak for him.
