WASHINGTON, DC: The Trump administration reportedly criticized Brazil after the South American nation denied visas to two senior US State Department officials who were scheduled to visit ahead of its October presidential election.

Brazilian officials reportedly blocked the delegation over concerns the visit could be used to cast doubt on the country's electoral system, an allegation the US State Department strongly rejected. The development marks the latest escalation in tensions between Washington and Brasilia amid an increasingly strained relationship over trade, politics and Brazil's upcoming election.

Brazil blocks US delegation over election integrity concerns

According to The Wall Street Journal, Brazil's Foreign Ministry denied visas to Riley M Barnes, assistant secretary in the State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, and Samuel Samson, a deputy assistant secretary of state, derailing a planned visit next week.

Brazilian officials reportedly believed the delegation was part of a broader effort linked to allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro to undermine confidence in the country's October 4 presidential election if right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, the former president's son, is defeated.

The State Department confirmed that Barnes and Samson were expected to travel to Brazil to hold meetings on election integrity and other issues but rejected claims that the trip was intended to interfere in the country's democratic process. "Any insinuation of a 'ploy' to undermine a democratic nation's election is a baseless lie," the department said in a statement.

According to the reports, the US officials had planned to meet Brazilian electoral authorities to discuss voting systems and concerns surrounding freedom of expression ahead of the election. They were also expected to meet Flávio Bolsonaro, who has made several visits to Washington in recent months.

Brazilian officials reportedly became concerned after Flavio Bolsonaro repeated claims questioning the security of the country's electronic voting machines. Brazil's election court has rejected those allegations, stating that the voting system is secure and that the Venezuelan company Smartmatic has never supplied machines used in Brazilian elections.

Diplomatic tensions deepen ahead of Brazil's October vote

The visa denials come amid growing diplomatic friction between the United States and Brazil following recent US tariffs, sanctions and disagreements over issues including organized crime and the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of plotting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Trump has previously criticized the case against Bolsonaro, who remains one of his closest international political allies.

The reports also noted that this is not the first time Brazilian authorities have blocked a Trump administration envoy. Earlier this year, another US representative was reportedly denied entry after officials learned of plans to meet the jailed former president and his son.

The latest dispute comes as Brazil prepares for a closely watched presidential election that is expected to draw international attention, with both governments continuing to dispute the circumstances surrounding the canceled diplomatic visit.
