NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The reelection campaign for former President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced raking in over $76 million in April, reported Fox News.

According to the publication, the presumptive GOP nominee is working towards closing his fundraising deficit to his rival, incumbent Joe Biden, while he is facing trial for the 2016 hush-money case in Manhattan. In March, Biden and the Democratic National Committee had together raised approximately $90 million, while the haul by his challenger and RNC stood at around $65 million.

The fundraising figures for Trump were revealed on Saturday, May 4, at the RNC's spring donor retreat in Palm Beach, Florida, where the donors were reportedly given a one-hour presentation by the Trump campaign officials.

In the presentation, officials highlighted that the former president was ahead in polls in the key battleground states of Georgia, Nevada, and Arizona, and competitive in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. Back in 2020, all six states went to Biden by a narrow margin.

Senior campaign advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles shared in a statement announcing the haul, "President Donald J Trump is not only winning across every battleground state, but we are raising the resources necessary to deliver a victory in November."

"With half of (the) funds raised coming from small-dollar donors, it is clear that our base is energized. The Republican Party is united, and voters nationwide are ready to FIRE Joe Biden and elect President Donald J Trump," they added.

RNC chair Michael Whatley and co-chair Lara Trump further stated, "Our team will continue working every day to exceed expectations, raise the funds we need, and build an unmatched party infrastructure to prove that President Trump’s momentum is unstoppable."

Internet says election win should be about 'character not chash'

The internet had mixed reactions to Trump making as much fundraising money as Biden.

"Both parties take in way too much money for campaigns (both above board and dark money through NGOs, etc.)," commented a reader on the Fox News website.

"I think that every time Biden speaks publicly Trump should claim it as a campaign contribution!" jibed another.

"Its kind of sad in a way that elections are won by who has the most money. It should be about character not cash.. But that's just me," exclaimed a third.

The social media users were divided on their take. As one user wrote, "Trump has already got way more people funding him than Biden. It’s the number of people doing the funding instead of the few big (donors) Biden has," another slammed back, "When you're charging your billionaire friends $100,000 to eat in the same room with you, it wouldn't be ... hard."
