You read about all these crazy shooters, but they only go after consequential presidents. They don't go after non-consequential presidents, you know?

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump made his first public remarks on Monday, February 23, regarding the armed intruder shot and killed by the Secret Service at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
During an 'Angel Families' event in the White House East Room, the president adopted a philosophical tone, joking that "crazy shooters" only target "consequential presidents."
Trump, who survived two assassination attempts in 2024, compared himself to Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy, noting that they too were "consequential" figures.
The president was not in Florida at the time of the breach; he had spent Saturday night hosting a dinner for governors at the White House with First Lady Melania Trump.
Secret Service neutralizes armed threat
The intruder, identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of Cameron, North Carolina, was discovered on the grounds of the Palm Beach club at approximately 1.30 am on Sunday.
Martin was observed carrying a gun and a gas can. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, Martin was ordered by law enforcement to drop his equipment.
While Martin complied by putting down the gas can, he reportedly raised the gun into a "shooting position."
Secret Service agents guarding the home immediately opened fire to "neutralize the threat." This incident occurred only miles from the 2024 assassination attempt by Ryan Routh, who was sentenced to life in prison earlier this month.
President Trump reflects on his own mortality
Addressing families who lost loved ones to crimes committed by illegal migrants, the president spoke candidly about the dangers he faces.
“I don’t know how long I’ll be around,” he told the audience, while praising the "Angel Families" as the bravest people he has met. He noted that he feels a particularly "warm feeling" when meeting with this specific group.
Trump’s comments come on the heels of a violent 2024 campaign trail, most notably the July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
During that event, gunman Thomas Crooks fired eight shots, grazing the president’s ear and killing an attendee before being killed by a counter-sniper. Trump joked that perhaps he should be "a little bit less consequential" to avoid such recurring threats.
History of threats in Palm Beach
The fatal shooting of Austin Tucker Martin adds to a growing list of security breaches involving the president’s Florida properties.
The location is in close proximity to the West Palm Beach club where Ryan Routh was spotted by agents before he could carry out an assassination attempt while Trump played golf.
Following the neutralization of the threat on Sunday, law enforcement emphasized the continued high-alert status of the president’s residences.
While the president continues his official duties in Washington, the investigation into Martin's motives remains active, joining a series of high-profile security cases handled by the Secret Service over the past two years.
