Trump calls for expulsion of 'disgraceful' Ilhan Omar from Congress over Charlie Kirk remarks

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump escalated attacks on Rep Ilhan Omar (D-Minn) on Friday, September 19, calling for her removal from Congress after she dismissed tributes to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk as attempts to “rewrite history.”

Speaking at an event earlier this week, Omar described Kirk as a “hateful man” and bluntly told his supporters, “you’re full of s**t.”

The remarks quickly drew outrage from Republicans and Kirk’s allies, who accused Omar of glorifying his killing and disrespecting his legacy.

In a previous interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan on his Zeteo platform, Omar had similarly condemned GOP leaders’ responses to the assassination, again saying they were “full of s**t.”



 

During that conversation, she accused Rep Nancy Mace (R-SC) of harassing political opponents and said Trump had “incited violence against people like me.” Still, she acknowledged the brutality of Kirk’s death, describing the footage as “mortifying” and adding, “You know, all I could think about was his wife, his children, that image is going to live forever.”

Trump calls for Ilhan Omar’s expulsion

Trump seized on Omar’s remarks to renew calls for her expulsion from Congress. Speaking to reporters while aboard Air Force One, he said he supported stripping her of committee assignments.

“She’s from SOMALIA! These people come from a place with NOTHING, and then they tell us how to run our country.”



 

“I think she’s a disgraceful person, a loser,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “It’s amazing the way people vote—I know it's people from her area, maybe all over the world. They got here, and they vote her in. It's hard to believe, but I think she's a disgusting person.”

His condemnation extended beyond her remarks on Kirk.



 

On Truth Social, the president unleashed a scathing post targeting Omar’s Somali heritage, writing, “lIhan Omar’s Country of Somalia is plagued by a lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger" among other things. His post claimed that  "70% of the population lives in extreme Poverty, and widespread Food Insecurity." He went on to say that "Somalia is consistently ranked among the World’s Most Corrupt Countries, including Bribery, Embezzlement, and a Dysfunctional Government.”

The post continued, “All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! PS.”

Trump ended his post with: “What SCUM we have in our country, telling us what to do, and how to do it. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

For Omar, the controversy adds to a long history of Republican attacks. She was previously removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee in 2023, and GOP lawmakers have frequently targeted her comments on US foreign policy, Israel, and national security.

Omar, however, has stood by her criticism, accusing Trump and his allies of exploiting Kirk’s death to inflame political divisions. “These people are full of s**t, and it’s important for us to call them out while we feel anger and sadness,” she said in her interview.
