WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump, speaking to ABC News, reacted favorably to the announcement that Marjorie Taylor Greene will resign from her US House seat on January 5.

Her decision follows a significant break in the relationship between the two, with Trump calling her resignation “great for the country.”

Trump and Marjorie Taylor Greene's fallout

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican representative from Georgia, first elected in 2020, had previously positioned herself as a staunch Donald Trump supporter.

However, their relationship soured in recent weeks over various issues, one key reason being the release of Jeffrey Epstein-related files.

Trump recently publicly withdrew his endorsement of Greene and sharply criticized her, referring to her as a “ranting lunatic” and a “traitor.”

When asked if Greene gave him advance notice of her decision to resign, Trump said, “Nah, it doesn’t matter, you know, but I think it’s great. I think she should be happy.”

In her announcement filmed from her Georgia home, Greene said that if she has been cast aside by “MAGA Inc,” it indicates that “many common Americans have been cast aside and replaced as well.”

She also said, “My life is filled with happiness, and my true convictions remain unchanged, because my self-worth is not defined by a man, but instead by God.”

Greene had been closely tied to the Republican president since she launched her political career five years ago.

Marjorie Taylor Greene says loyalty should be a two-way street

In her video on Friday, Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that she had remained loyal to Donald Trump for a long time aside from a few disagreements, and stated that his criticism of her for dissenting was “unfair and wrong.”

“Loyalty should be a two-way street and we should be able to vote our conscience and represent our district’s interest, because our job title is literally ‘representative,’” she said.

Meanwhile, other figures weighed in. Rep Thomas Massie, who worked with Greene on a discharge petition to force a House vote on legislation to release the Epstein documents, said he’d “miss her tremendously.”

He called her someone who “embodies what a true Representative should be” and praised the statement for its honesty.

Also commenting was Steve Bannon, former White House strategist and host of the 'War Room' podcast. He said, “We haven’t seen or heard the last of Greene. The House is not big enough for her ambitions or personality.”
