Trump celebrates major victory after Virginia court halts Democrat-backed map overhaul
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Friday, May 9 claimed a major political victory after Virginia’s highest court blocked a Democratic-backed effort to redraw the state’s congressional map, a plan Republicans had fiercely opposed for weeks.
The president quickly highlighted the ruling as a turning point in the fight over congressional power, arguing that the decision stopped what he described as an aggressive attempt to reshape the electoral map in Democrats’ favor ahead of the midterm cycle.

Trump calls ruling a major victory
Reacting within minutes of the ruling, Trump posted on Truth Social and called the outcome a “huge win for the Republican Party, and America.”
He accused Democrats of trying to engineer a map that would have dramatically altered Virginia’s congressional landscape and potentially weakened Republican representation in the state.
The ruling came from the Supreme Court of Virginia, where justices voted 4-3 to invalidate the proposed redistricting process.
The court found that the referendum used to advance the map did not fully comply with constitutional procedures required under Virginia law.
At the center of the dispute was a Democrat-supported proposal that could have redrawn multiple congressional districts and significantly reshaped the balance of political power in Virginia.
Political observers had projected the new map might create several opportunities for Democrats to gain seats in the US House, a possibility that had alarmed Republican leaders nationally.
Trump, who has made redistricting a central political issue during his second term, said the ruling proved courts are beginning to push back against what he views as partisan attempts to manipulate election systems.
Calling the proposed map a “gerrymander designed for political survival,” Trump argued Republicans had successfully stopped an effort to rewrite the rules in the middle of an election cycle.
GOP leaders join celebration
Soon after Trump’s reaction, senior Republicans also moved to frame the court’s decision as a constitutional victory.
Mike Johnson praised the ruling, saying it confirmed Republican concerns that the redistricting process had been rushed and legally flawed.
The Virginia Supreme Court has affirmed what we believed from the beginning — the hastily drawn egregious gerrymander was unconstitutional. This ruling is a victory for democracy and ensures Virginians have fair representation in Congress.

“This decision protects the integrity of representative government,” Johnson said, adding that voters not politicians should determine political outcomes.
Republicans have increasingly argued that Democratic-led map changes in blue and purple states are part of a larger national effort to offset Republican gains in red states ahead of 2026.
The decision, however, drew frustration from Democrats.
More than three million Virginians cast their ballots in Virginia’s redistricting referendum, and the majority of Virginia voters voted to push back against a President who said he is ‘entitled’ to more Republican seats in Congress with a temporary and responsive referendum. They…

Abigail Spanberger said she respected the court but was disappointed by the result.
“My focus remains on making sure every Virginian is heard in the elections ahead,” Spanberger said, emphasizing that voters would ultimately shape the state’s political future.
