Fact Check: Did Trump exaggerate his Republican support with ‘100% approval’?
WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed to have a 100% approval rating among supporters of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. The claim has garnered mixed reactions, with some believing it to be true while others remain skeptical. Let us analyze the claim and fact-check its authenticity.
Claim: Trump claims he has 100% approval rating among Republicans
Trump made the claim based on a television segment that explained that an NBC News poll had found that the president had a 100% approval rating among MAGA supporters.
He even played the video during a speech in March, which featured CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten.
While speaking at the White House on Tuesday, he said, “I am at, according to CNN, 100% approval within the Republican Party … I’m at 100% approval. Did you see the CNN poll?"
He added, "Nobody talks about it. CNN – I think the people that did that poll probably got fired. But within the Republican Party – and MAGA, which is basically 100% of the party, I think, but – 100%.”
Fact Check: Trump’s approval among Republicans remains strong but not 100%
Trump’s claim is false, as there is no such poll by CNN and Enten’s segment was about an NBC News poll. A more recent poll conducted by CNN from March 26 to March 30 found Trump at 80% approval among Republicans.
Several polls show that although Trump still has strong support and significant influence in the Republican Party, MAGA supporters do not make up “basically 100%” of Republicans, as he claimed.
Recent surveys found that about half of Republicans identify more with MAGA. Meanwhile, a large minority still prefer the Republican Party over the MAGA movement or want the party to move in a different direction.
Trump’s approval among Republicans remains strong, but it is not at 100%. Several polls indicate that his support has dipped slightly during 2026 as his overall popularity with the general public has declined.
Trump’s Republican support dips amid GOP divisions
A recent poll suggests that Trump’s approval among Republicans dropped to its lowest level ever in the Issues & Insights/TIPP poll, with 18% now holding an unfavorable view of him.
The decline comes as the GOP faces internal divisions regarding the Iran conflict and economic pressures impacting important voter groups.
With elections on the horizon, the data points to possible weaknesses for Trump’s second-term plans.
