WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump is weighing a move into the 2025 New York City mayoral race, aiming to stop Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani from taking office.

With the election set for November 4, Trump has privately discussed the race with political allies – including former Governor Andrew Cuomo – as he searches for the strongest challenger to Mamdani, whose left-wing views he fiercely opposes.

The crowded field includes incumbent Eric Adams running as an independent, Republican activist Curtis Sliwa, and Cuomo himself. Here's what insiders told The New York Times on Wednesday, August 6, about Trump's behind-the-scenes efforts to block Mamdani.

Donald Trump's efforts to block Zohran Mamdani

Reports suggest that Donald Trump has been actively seeking advice on who stands the best chance of defeating Zohran Mamdani in the upcoming New York City mayoral race. He reportedly pressed a Republican congressman and a New York businessman for their opinions.

Andrew Cuomo re-entered the race as an independent just weeks after losing to Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Although there are claims that Trump spoke directly with Cuomo, the president later denied any such conversation.

Trump has been briefed by pollster Mark Penn, who previously worked with the Clintons, and former New York City Council President Andrew Stein. Both are said to have recommended Cuomo as the strongest candidate to challenge Mamdani.

A source revealed that during a mid-July White House meeting, Trump asked Republican Congressman Mike Lawler, who represents the New York suburbs, who he believed would be most effective in a one-on-one race against Mamdani.

While Trump has expressed doubts about Sliwa’s chances, he has reportedly spoken favorably about both Adams and Cuomo, noting that he has had good relationships with them.

It remains unclear how Trump might choose to get involved. Additional reports indicate that allies of both Adams and Cuomo have been eager for Trump to take a more active role in the New York City mayoral race.

They believe Trump’s involvement could help unify the anti-Mamdani vote behind a single candidate, rather than allowing Adams, Sliwa, and Cuomo to divide the opposition.

Donald Trump, a New York native and longtime business owner in the city, has openly attacked Zohran Mamdani.

Last month, Trump declared he wouldn’t “let this communist lunatic destroy New York,” claiming he holds “all the levers” and “all the cards.” He promised, “I’ll save New York City and make it ‘hot’ and ‘great’ again, just like I did with the good ol’ USA!”

Rich Azzopardi, a spokesperson for Andrew Cuomo, stated that Trump and Cuomo “have not spoken in a while,” but declined to clarify the timeline. “As far as I know, they haven’t discussed the race,” Azzopardi added.

Zohran Mamdani fired back in a public statement, accusing Cuomo of serving the powerful and putting his interests above those of the people.

“Andrew Cuomo has spent his career governing for the powerful and prioritising his own self-interests over those of the people he was sworn to serve. This is not just a shady backroom deal by a cynical politician, it is disqualifying. It is a betrayal,” he said. “The job of New York City mayor is not to be [a] jester for a wannabe king, it is to protect the people of this city.”

As reports surface about Donald Trump possibly stepping into the New York City mayoral race to block Zohran Mamdani, social media users have flooded the internet with strong reactions.

One user criticized the idea, saying, “It's for the people of New York to decide not the President to fix the result.”

Another commenter shared curiosity: “Interesting development. Looking forward to seeing how this plays out in the NYC mayor’s race.”

Some users offered suggestions, with one writing, “Donald Trump should do a rally for Cuomo at MSG.”

Others voiced frustration, “He needs to focus on the big beautiful file—THE Epstein’s file,” one person said.

Another Facebook user expressed optimism for Mamdani: “A sure guarantee Mamdani will win.”

One commenter questioned the legality of Trump's involvement, “How can Trump interfere in the local elections? Interfering in the elections, trying to steal elections, threatening election officials are his things. But none of that is legal.”

A different user viewed the move as aggressive, saying, “Sounds like a personal threat to Mamdani. Billionaires like Trump are terrified.”

Another reflected on the broader implications, “If true, this is a surprising move by Trump—getting involved in a local NYC mayor’s race is definitely unusual. Curious to see how this plays out and what kind of impact it might have.”
