Trump expresses sympathy for Charlie Kirk suspect's 'very nice' parents: 'It must have been traumatic'

BEDMINSTER, NEW JERSEY: After chilling reports emerged about Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, President Donald Trump spoke kindly about the suspect’s parents during an event at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf club. 

The 22-year-old's parents are Matt Robinson, who runs a construction business, and Amber Denise, who works in disability services helping individuals access care.

Addressing a small crowd on the evening of Saturday, September 13, Trump described the suspect’s parents as “very nice people,” even as he condemned the young man responsible for the fatal shooting.

What did Trump say about parents of Charlie Kirk’s shooting suspect?

Michael Solakiewicz, a pro-MAGA digital creator on X (formerly Twitter) who goes by PatriotTakes, shared a video in which Donald Trump spoke about the suspect in Charlie Kirk’s shooting.

The Republican leader said, “So many things have been learned about [the shooter] so quickly. He’s become totally radicalized and crazy and it must have been traumatic. Because the parents are conservative people, supposed to be very nice people living in Utah.” Trump added, “The father turns in the son. Boy, that’s a tough deal.”

Over the weekend, reports revealed new details about Tyler. He apparently lived with his alleged transgender partner at the time of the shooting, and that partner is now fully cooperating with the FBI’s investigation. According to The New York Times, Robinson had written phrases like “Hey fascist! CATCH!” and “Bella Ciao,” an antifascist anthem, on bullet casings.

A video clip that went viral on X shows an alleged former classmate describing Tyler as a “Reddit kid” whose mind was warped by the platform.



 

Meanwhile, law enforcement and people who knew Tyler struggled to understand how he transformed from a member of a Republican Mormon family into the man who murdered the 31-year-old conservative activist, Kirk.

Tyler's father was the one who reportedly turned him over to authorities on Friday.

 Trump also announced he will attend Kirk’s funeral in Arizona this week, calling it his “obligation” to do so.

Internet reacts to Trump offering kind words to Tyler Robinson's parents

The video of Donald Trump commenting on the prime suspect in Charlie Kirk;s shooting during an event at his golf club quickly went viral, sparking widespread discussion online.

 

One user criticized Trump, writing, “More lies from Trump. They are weaving their own story.”



 

Another mocked his tone, saying, "'He was bad but his parents voted for me' vibes."



 

Another commenter offered a different take, claiming, “The parents were radicals and taught him radicalization. He just moved in the other direction, but the radicalization was family culture.”



 

Some users speculated about Trump’s intentions, with one writing, “Let's understand what Trump means when he says they're 'supposed to be nice people.' He means they voted for Trump - that's his only qualification for saying someone is nice.”



 

Jokes and sharp critiques also filled the replies. One commenter quipped, “Keep that quote for defense counsel. Because it will help to get the kid a reduced sentence.”



 

Others pushed back more harshly. “They weren’t that nice. They raised a killer,” one person argued.



 

Another added sarcastically, “Agreed. There are Wro bad people I. The entire state of Utah. They have no crime and all jails are empty.”
