WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Sunday, July 5, reignited his criticism of Democrat-led cities after a violent Fourth of July weekend, using a short but pointed Truth Social post to argue that America's biggest public safety crisis isn't overseas; it is happening at home.

Without mentioning the Democratic Party directly, Trump highlighted Chicago's shooting numbers to drive home his message that Democratic leadership has failed to control violent crime in major urban centers.

Trump taunts Democrats over law and order failure

Trump's one-line post shifted attention from foreign conflicts to crime at home.

Trump wrote on Truth Social: "Over 273 Americans have been shot since the war in IRAN began... in Chicago."

The post appeared designed to contrast the intense public attention given to international conflicts with the persistent violence taking place in American cities.

Though only a single sentence, it quickly drew attention online as supporters viewed it as another example of Trump's emphasis on domestic law-and-order issues.

The president's post came only hours after unprecedented violence was witnessed in New York and Chicago.

Brooklyn barbecue turns into nightmare

On July 4, a mass shooting disrupted a family Independence Day celebration in Brooklyn's Coney Island neighborhood.

According to the NYPD, a masked gunman dressed in black approached a backyard barbecue Saturday night before opening fire through a fence and fleeing the scene.

Eight people were struck by gunfire, including four children aged 6, 7, 12 and 14. Authorities said a 21-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and remains in critical condition.

Investigators recovered a TEC-9-style firearm magazine and multiple shell casings. Police are also examining whether the shooting could be connected to a gang-related homicide that occurred nearby days earlier.

Chicago records multiple shootings

While New York investigators searched for suspects, Chicago police were dealing with another violent night.

A series of shootings on the city's West Side left several teenagers and young adults wounded. Among the victims were three 17-year-olds, while others ranged from 18 to 20 years old.

Police also confirmed that a man was later found fatally shot roughly a mile from the earlier incidents. Detectives are investigating whether any of the shootings are connected.

Chicago has recorded more than 200 homicides in the first half of 2026, marking a rise from last year. Police data shows 210 killings through June, representing an increase of nearly 6% compared with the same period in 2025.

Trump has repeatedly argued that violent crime is concentrated in cities governed by Democratic leaders.

His latest Truth Social post follows a weekend in which both New York and Chicago saw high-profile shootings, giving the president another opportunity to renew his criticism of Democratic governance.
