WASHINGTON, DC: A fresh warning from Donald Trump has injected new volatility into the already fragile US-Iran standoff, with the president issuing one of his starkest messages yet as ceasefire diplomacy appears to be hanging by a thread.

In a sharply worded message posted Sunday, May 17, Trump suggested time was rapidly running out for Tehran, dramatically escalating pressure just as new details emerged about Washington’s reported terms for reviving negotiations.

Trump turns up the heat on Iran

Posting on Truth Social, Trump delivered a direct and ominous message to Iran: “For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”

The warning landed only hours after Iranian state-linked media began publishing details of what it described as Washington’s core demands for restarting formal negotiations after months of war and retaliation.

According to reports circulated in Iran, the US is pushing a hardline framework before any lasting agreement can move forward.

Among the reported conditions, Tehran would have to hand over roughly 400 kilograms of enriched uranium, drastically reduce its nuclear footprint by keeping only one operational nuclear facility, and accept that Washington will not pay compensation for damage caused during the conflict.

Iran, however, appears to be digging in.

Tehran has reportedly pushed back with its own set of demands, including broad sanctions relief, the release of frozen financial assets, compensation for wartime damage, and formal recognition of its authority over the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.

Mistrust remains on both sides

The current ceasefire followed weeks of devastating exchanges involving Iran, Israel, and US-linked military operations across the region.

Fighting temporarily paused after Pakistani mediators helped broker a truce, but attempts to convert that ceasefire into a permanent settlement have repeatedly stalled.

Multiple reports state that the negotiations show mistrust on both sides remains enormous.

Washington reportedly wants Iran’s nuclear program fundamentally rolled back before discussing broader normalization.

Tehran, meanwhile, is seeking economic relief and recognition of strategic interests before making irreversible concessions.

Trump’s latest warning suggests patience inside the White House may be running out.
