WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump and Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheal Martin concluded their St Patrick's Day events at the White House. The day ended with the Shamrock Bowl ceremony in the East Room on Tuesday, March 17.

During the event, Trump commented on Iran and the Middle East. His light joke changed the mood and made the room feel more relaxed.

Trump also spoke about trade between the US and Ireland. He said the trade relationship is strong and will grow quickly. He added that it was a great honour to welcome Micheal Martin. He said they would discuss many topics, including trade and cooperation.

Trump’s Iran joke lightens White House event

Trump made the Shamrock Bowl event more lively with his comments at the White House. The event was part of St Patrick's Day celebrations. It started as a formal ceremony, but his words made it feel more relaxed.

While speaking to the audience, Trump said, “You just got to witness him. So it’s really wonderful being with you. We have a lot of things happening. It’s like I spent my whole day with the Irish.” This showed how the day was focused on Irish culture and friendship.

He then said something unexpected that made everyone laugh. Trump said, “I should have been spending it with the Iranians, that’s what.” The comment changed the mood and made the room feel lighter. He later added, “Well, in a different sense, we’re doing very well.”

His mix of serious talk and humor made the event more engaging and easy to follow.

St Patrick’s Day meeting continues amid Iran tensions

Despite the ongoing strikes against Iran, Trump went ahead with St Patrick's Day engagements at the White House alongside Martin. Martin’s visit followed Ireland’s long-standing tradition, in which the taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) travels to Washington each year to meet the US president and mark the occasion.

During their Oval Office meeting, Martin expressed appreciation to Trump for “affirming the tremendous bonds” between Ireland and the United States, highlighting the close ties between the two countries.

Trump also spoke warmly about their relationship. He said, “It’s a great honour to have Taoiseach Martin, somebody that we know we get along with. We’ve had a very good relationship.” He further pointed to strong trade links, saying, “We have a tremendous trade relationship with Ireland, and we’ll keep it that way. I think it’s going to be expanded very quickly.”

He added, “Probably they want to talk a little bit about tariffs, but I won’t mention that - you might want to be discussing that a little bit.”
