NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Fox News contributor Jonathan Turley argued that there was no reason for New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg to bring up Donald Trump's hush money case ahead of the 2024 elections except to keep him off the campaign trail, on the Tuesday, April 23 episode of 'America Reports.'

Labeling it as a "weaponization of the criminal justice system," Turley seemed at one with the former President, who asked why the DA's Office picked up the case the previous day.

Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 presidential election. Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse on Monday, Trump said, "If this were such a great case, why didn't the Southern District bring it? Who looked at it and turned it down. Why didn't numerous other agencies and law enforcement groups look at it? Because it was shown to everybody. And very importantly, why didn't the Federal Elections do anything about it? Because this is federal, it's not state."

"It's not state… It's never happened before, I believe," he continued. "Never happened before… where the state tries to insert itself into federal elections. Never. Nobody's ever seen it. But, you know, Federal Elections took a total pass on it."

Jonathan Turley says New York should've never brought case against Trump

"Well, I think he's (Trump) right. This case, should not have been brought. And if it were brought, there was no reason to have this right before the election, in my view. But this is becoming the split screen election, right? Earlier, it was pretty damaging to see the split screen between Trump and different courtrooms," Turley told the co-hosts on the Fox News show discussing the subject.

"This is even more effective when the other side of the screen shows Biden campaigning in key states, like Pennsylvania, while he's held in this courtroom. It really brings home something that bothers a lot of Americans, including people who don't particularly like Trump, that this is the weaponization of the criminal legal system. It's something we should all be able to condemn. But in this age of rage, it just does not matter to many people," he added.

Internet says 'lawfare' designed to keep Trump from campaigning

The internet sided with Trump and Turley and deemed the hush money trial as "election tampering."

"The ultimate election tampering, prosecuting Trump for a non-disclosure agreement," wrote a reader.

"This case against Trump and others is another example of Democrats abusing our legal system for both political and monetary gain. It will surely backfire as political analyst have predicted," stated another.

"It’s like they know they will win at trial, but know they will lose on appeal. They seem to be more interested in using the trial to embarrass, interfere, and cost Trump money," commented a third.

"Absolutely sickening to see this utter miscarriage of justice. How many politicians have done similar things and walked without mere mention? President Trump has to resume his place in the WH next year and then wreak havoc on those tampering with our election," mentioned a fourth.

"This lawfare is designed to keep President Trump from campaigning plain and simple. Joe’s directing it," quipped a fifth.
