WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump claimed the border between the United States and Canada is simply a line drawn by a "ruler" as he doubled down on his proposal of making the northern neighbour the 51st state of his country on Friday, March 21, reported The Mirror US

The border between the two countries run 5,525-mile-long. Trump's threat to erase it has drawn the ire of Canadians. Newly-instated Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier this month he was ready to meet with Trump if he "respects Canadian sovereignty" and is open to talk about a common approach to trade.

The POTUS’ recent comments come amid US’ tariff war with Canada, with US imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canada’s steel and aluminum, and threatening even more from April 2.

Donald Trump's statement on US-Canada border

During a press briefing in the Oval Office on Friday, Donald Trump was asked by reporters than in the event of him being able to convince Canada to become the 51st state of US, was he worried it would be “a very, very blue” i.e. progressive state.

The 78-year-dismissed the concern saying, “It might be but…you have that artificial line that looks like it was drawn by a ruler. I don't mean a ruler like a king, I mean a ruler like a ruler.”

"It's just an artificial line that was drawn in the sand or in the ice. You add that to this country - what a beautiful land mass,” he continued to explain.

“Is it liberal? Maybe…I don't care who wins up there, frankly I probably would do better with a liberal rather than a conservative," Trump added.

Internet trolls Donald Trump over his comments

Netizens mocked Donald Trump for his comment on the US-Canada border on the social media platform X. The following tweets demonstrate their takes.

"Unhinged babble from the orange man," wrote a user.

"Umm....all borders are artificial. Sometimes a river or mountain chain is used as a guide, but they are all artificial," noted another.

"Is that not how all borders look? Ever seen a map?" asked one.

"Does he also mean the same funny looking line that separates us and Mexicans? That one seems to mean a lot to him," jibed another.

"When you want a 4 year old type answer, ask Donald Trump," mocked an individual.

"He really can't believe this nonsense, can he?" a comment read.
