WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Saturday, March 7, posted a video containing multiple clips of Democratic leaders discussing Iran, including statements expressing support for potential US military action if Iran attacked Israel or pursued nuclear weapons.
Democrats have accused Trump of declaring war on Iran without approval from Congress, which is the only body authorized to make that decision. Meanwhile, the Republican-controlled House narrowly voted to reject a resolution that would have restricted Trump’s war in Iran, one day after the Senate blocked a similar war powers resolution.
Trump video highlights Hillary Clinton and Obama statements on Iran
The video shared by Trump began with the host stating, “For 47 years, the Iranian regime has regularly targeted and killed Americans, and while Democrats talked tough on Iran, they sought no action.”
The host then referenced remarks from 2008, before Hillary Clinton became Secretary of State. In the clip, Clinton said, “If Iran were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel, what would our response be? And I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran."
She continued, "Whatever stage of development they might be in their nuclear weapons program in the next 10 years during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them.”
The host then stated, “Of course, that never happened.” Clinton lost the nomination to Former President Barack Obama, who instead sought to make a deal with Iran.
The video then showed Obama speaking at the White House on January 17, 2016, saying, “Over the years, Iran moved closer and closer to having the ability to build a nuclear weapon. President, I decided that a strong, confident America could advance our national security by engaging directly with the Iranian government.”
The host continued by saying that a week after Obama’s statement, former Secretary of State John Kerry admitted that the Iran nuclear deal would give money to extremist groups.
In the clip, a reporter asked Kerry, “You believe that any of that $55 billion ends up in the hands of te*rorists?” Kerry replied: “I think that some of it will end up in the hands of the IRGC or of other entities, some of which are labeled to extremist groups..”
Clips featuring Biden administration, and Iran’s leadership change
The video then fast-forwarded to 2022, when Former President Joe Biden’s press secretary said Iran was accelerating its nuclear program. In the April 2022 clip, the press secretary said, “Iran has rapidly accelerated its nuclear program and reduced cooperation with international inspectors in non-performance of Iran nuclear deal commitments."
She continued, "Their breakout period is down from about a year, which is what we knew it was during the deal, to just a few weeks or less.” The host added, “But all Biden said was don’t.”
A later clip also showed Obama saying, “And in retrospect, I think that was a mistake. Every time we see a flash, a glimmer of hope, of people longing for freedom, I think we have to point it out. We have to shine a spotlight on it. We have to express some solidarity about it.”
The video concluded with comments about Iran’s response to recent US strikes under Operation Epic Fury. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi was asked about the possibility of a US invasion.
He replied, “We are waiting for them. because we are confident that we can confront them and that would be a big disaster for them.” The host then said that Trump had taken out "the Ayatollah along with 49 others before also taking out those counting votes for the next Ayatollah."
