WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Monday, March 30, criticized the current interpretation of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment, arguing it is being misused by foreign nationals.

In a series of social media posts, the President said the provision, originally enacted after the Civil War, is being applied in ways that go beyond its intended scope.

Trump stated that the amendment was designed to grant citizenship to formerly enslaved individuals and their descendants, and questioned its application in modern immigration contexts.

He also criticized judicial interpretations that have upheld the current framework, calling for a reassessment of how the law is applied.

The remarks come as the administration continues to address immigration policy alongside ongoing military developments overseas.

Marine strike force reaches Middle East

Separately, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the USS Tripoli (LHA-7) has entered its area of responsibility in the Middle East.

The amphibious assault ship is operating as part of the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group alongside the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), bringing approximately 3,500 Sailors and Marines to the region.

The deployment adds to the US military presence amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

The Tripoli is equipped with aviation and amphibious capabilities, including F-35B aircraft and marine units trained for rapid-response missions, evacuations, and contingency operations.

CENTCOM released images showing flight operations and training exercises aboard the vessel, indicating that forces are positioned for potential operational requirements as directed.

Trump links tariffs to court reform

In his comments, Trump also referenced US trade policy, arguing that economic measures such as tariffs remain an important tool in addressing broader concerns about international practices.

He suggested that trade and immigration issues are interconnected in shaping national policy.

The President reiterated his position that the US should review existing legal interpretations related to citizenship, though no specific policy changes were announced alongside his remarks.

The issue of birthright citizenship has been the subject of ongoing political and legal debate, with previous efforts to reinterpret or modify its scope facing judicial scrutiny.

Defense officials say the arrival of the USS Tripoli enhances operational flexibility for US forces in the region.

The 31st MEU provides a combination of ground, aviation, and logistical capabilities that can be deployed across a range of scenarios, including maritime security and rapid-response missions.

The deployment follows a broader buildup of US assets in the Middle East, as military planners continue to assess next steps in the conflict.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that current operations may continue in the near term, while diplomatic efforts remain ongoing.
