Trump sued over Kennedy Center renaming as lawyers cite major financial and cultural damage
WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump is bracing for fresh legal trouble after a federal lawsuit challenged his controversial move to rename the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, with attorneys warning that the damages caused by the decision have been 'substantial.'
The legal action, filed this month, seeks to reverse the name change and undo what critics say has been lasting harm to one of the country’s most important cultural institutions.
The lawsuit has placed renewed scrutiny on Trump’s decision to overhaul the Kennedy Center’s leadership and rebrand the venue, a move that has since triggered backlash from artists, lawmakers, and longtime supporters of the arts.
Legal challenge claims wide-ranging damage to arts institution
Norm Eisen, a former White House ethics lawyer and a Washington, DC-based attorney involved in challenging the name change, confirmed that Trump would be held accountable for the fallout. Speaking to CBS, Eisen made clear that the case goes far beyond the costs associated with changing signage or branding.
“The damages have been substantial, and that will be addressed in the case,” Eisen said.

He added that the losses linked to the renaming extend deep into the institution’s core mission. “They include far more, of course, than the high cost of signage and of the other naming changes. The losses to the performing corps, to the audience base, to the bottom line of the Center, to its memorial and other activities, and indeed to the arts and arts education themselves have been vast.”
According to those backing the lawsuit, the name change undermined the Kennedy Center’s legacy as a memorial to President John F Kennedy and disrupted decades of cultural programming tied to that identity.
Joyce Beatty files federal lawsuit seeking restoration of Kennedy Center name
The legal fight was formally launched by Ohio Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, who filed a federal civil lawsuit calling for the immediate restoration of the venue’s original name - 'The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.'

The lawsuit seeks a judge’s order to nullify the vote that approved the renaming and to reinstate the historic designation. Beatty and other Democrats argue the move violated both tradition and the intent behind the creation of the arts center.
Trump’s role in the decision has been central to the case. After replacing the Kennedy Center’s board members with his own appointees, a subsequent vote passed to change the name, a sequence of events critics say was engineered to force through an unpopular decision.
‘A death pall’: Insiders describe chilling shift at the Kennedy Center
Beyond the courtroom, the mood inside the Kennedy Center has reportedly taken a sharp turn since the renaming. An insider told The Guardian’s Charlotte Higgins that the atmosphere at the venue soured almost immediately after Trump stepped in.
According to the source, the space now feels like a 'funeral parlor,' adding that 'there’s a deathly pall over the place.'
That shift has reportedly been accompanied by tangible consequences. An annual concert traditionally held on Martin Luther King Jr Day has been scrapped, raising concerns among performers and patrons alike. More strikingly, the Washington National Opera confirmed this month that it would be leaving the Kennedy Center altogether.
The opera company had been based at the venue since 1971 but is now seeking alternative accommodations, a move seen by many as a powerful rebuke of the changes imposed on the institution.
House Democrats move to counter renaming through legislation
The backlash has also spilled into Congress. House Democrats have introduced two bills aimed at intervening directly in the Kennedy Center renaming.
Rep. April McClain Delaney confirmed that one proposal would require the removal of any signage or other identification from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts that differs from the designation ‘John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.'
Delaney did not mince words when describing Trump’s actions. “A president can’t enshrine himself,” she said. “This is what authoritarian leaders do, it’s arrogant, and it’s narcissistic.”
