WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump triggered outrage across social media for referring to Canada as "one of the nastiest countries" that is meant to become the 51st state of the US, in an interview with Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham on Tuesday, March 18.

The incumbent's comment comes amid a tariff war that is being waged between the two countries. Tensions have escalated between the neighboring nations after Trump won the 2024 general election and shared his desire to merge Canada with the United States.

On 'The Ingraham Angle', Donald Trump argued in favor of his administration's harsh stance on Canada saying, "Here's my problem with Canada: Canada was meant to be the 51st state because we subsidize Canada by $200 billion a year.”

The United States requires nothing from Canada in exchange, he claimed.

"But you’re tougher with Canada than you are with some of our biggest adversaries," interjected Ingraham. "We’re not going to let them get close to China, right?” she asked.

"Only because it’s meant to be our 51st state," maintained Trump, before proceeding to attack former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was succeeded last week by Mark Carney.

"One of the nastiest countries to deal with is Canada. Now, this was Trudeau - good old Justin. I call him 'Governor Trudeau.' His people were nasty and they weren't telling the truth," continued the POTUS.

When Ingraham noted that Trump's comments might help the prospects of the Liberal Party against the Conservatives in the upcoming federal election of Canada, Trump simply said that he did not care.

Carney promised to "stand up to" Trump while running for the leadership of the Liberal Party. Last week, Canada said it would impose tariffs on $21 billion worth of American products entering the country, in response to Trump's 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum, per Newsweek.

Internet slams Donald Trump for dubbing Canada 'one of the nastiest countries'

Social media users on X were furious with Donald Trump for calling Canada "nasty" on television. The following tweets demonstrate their takes.

"This is quite unreasonable and inappropriate! With all respect, The President doesn’t need to be so rude to make his point," wrote a person.

"What a buffoon. Canada is not nasty. He is the nasty one," stated another.

"He might be more obsessed with Canada than himself. Canada lives in this dude’s mind," jibed one.

"Old man barks at the moon," quipped another.

"The biggest liar in the world says 'what'," said one individual.

"This man needs help," mocked another.

"He would be the authority on not telling the truth," said one user.

"God almighty he’s crazier than hell," expressed yet another.
