WASHINGTON, DC: The funeral of late Sen Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is set to become far more than a memorial service, bringing together some of the world's most influential leaders at a moment of mounting geopolitical tensions.

President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are all expected in Washington next week, creating an unexpected opportunity for high-stakes diplomacy amid the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine.

The White House has confirmed Trump will meet Netanyahu during the Israeli leader's visit, while sources familiar with the planning say Zelenskyy's trip could also include additional discussions beyond the funeral.

The extraordinary convergence comes just weeks after Graham's death on July 11 and reflects the late senator's longstanding influence on US foreign policy, particularly on support for Israel, Ukraine and a hardline approach toward Iran and Russia.

Benjamin Netanyahu heads to White House

Netanyahu's office announced that the Israeli prime minister will travel to Washington at Trump's invitation, with an Oval Office meeting scheduled before attending Graham's funeral.

The visit comes during heightened uncertainty over Iran after months of regional tensions. Trump is weighing future US policy toward Tehran, while Israel continues to push for close strategic coordination with Washington.

Netanyahu has met Trump six times since his return to office, more than any other foreign leader, highlighting the central role of the US-Israel alliance in the administration's Middle East strategy.

The timing has also fueled speculation. Trump told reporters earlier this week that he would meet Netanyahu if the Israeli leader traveled to Washington for the funeral, ending days of uncertainty over whether the meeting would take place.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit carries significance

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also expected to attend the funeral after maintaining a close relationship with Graham, who visited Kyiv only days before his death while advocating tougher sanctions against Russia.

Although no formal White House meeting has been announced, sources familiar with the planning say additional diplomatic engagements remain possible during Zelenskyy's visit.

Any discussions would come as Ukraine continues seeking sustained US military and financial support amid its ongoing war with Russia.

Graham had long been one of Kyiv's strongest advocates in Congress, making Zelenskyy's attendance both a personal tribute and a continuation of the late senator's international relationships.

Funeral becomes diplomatic stage

Gatherings of multiple world leaders often create opportunities for private meetings that might otherwise require separate international summits. Graham's funeral now appears poised to serve precisely that role.

With Netanyahu and Zelenskyy both in Washington simultaneously, officials may use the occasion to hold discussions on issues ranging from Iran and Gaza to Ukraine, sanctions and broader US security commitments.

While none of those meetings have been officially confirmed beyond Trump's session with Netanyahu, diplomatic observers note that such visits frequently produce behind-the-scenes conversations that shape future policy.

The unusual overlap reflects Graham's unique position as one of Washington's most influential foreign policy voices, whose relationships extended well beyond Capitol Hill.
