WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump has escalated the Reflecting Pool controversy by releasing surveillance footage he says proves vandals, not "faulty construction," were responsible for damaging the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

The video, posted to Truth Social on Saturday, August 1, comes just days after the Justice Department dropped its felony case against former Olympian David Hearn, concluding that flawed installation by a government contractor, rather than criminal vandalism, caused the primary damage.

Trump's decision to publish the footage represents his strongest effort yet to challenge the narrative adopted by his own Justice Department and revive the argument that the site was deliberately targeted.

By releasing what he describes as direct visual evidence, Trump is seeking to shift the public debate away from the DOJ's revised findings and back toward the original allegation that the damage resulted from intentional acts of vandalism.

Trump unveils surveillance footage

Sharing the video on Truth Social, Trump urged the public to "look for yourselves" at what he described as vandalism taking place at the Reflecting Pool.

He claimed the footage shows material being cut "with a knife or a box cutter, for all to see," arguing that the video directly contradicts the Justice Department's conclusion that contractor mistakes were primarily responsible for the damage.

The footage appears to show individuals gathered near the pool during the period under investigation.

Trump presented it as visual evidence supporting his long-held claim that vandals caused the destruction.

His latest post also comes after he publicly disagreed with US Attorney Jeanine Pirro's handling of the case, arguing that investigators placed too much emphasis on construction flaws while overlooking what he believes is clear evidence of deliberate damage.

The president did not indicate whether the footage formed part of the evidence reviewed by prosecutors before they dismissed the case.

DOJ findings remain unchanged

Despite Trump's latest post, the Justice Department has not altered its official position.

Federal prosecutors moved to dismiss the criminal case after stating newly uncovered evidence showed the damaged pool liner resulted from flawed installation by the contractor responsible for the renovation, rather than actions by the defendant.

The department has not announced any plans to reopen the prosecution or revisit its decision based on the newly publicized footage, leaving the dismissal in place despite the president's renewed objections.

Trump's release of the surveillance video therefore adds a new chapter to the dispute but does not change the legal outcome of the case.
