GLENDALE, ARIZONA: Former president Donald Trump pledged to set up a "commission on assassination" attempt that would be tasked with releasing the remaining documents related to the assassination of former president John F Kennedy.

Robert F Kennedy Jr, who suspended his independent campaign and endorsed Trump, stood next to the ex-president as he made the promise at a rally in Glendale, Arizona, on Friday, August 23.

Withdrawing his presidential bid, Kennedy called for his supporters to back the GOP presidential nominee in ten swing states but said his name would remain in most other states. Furthermore, he criticized the Democratic Party, which the Kennedy family has been associated with for a long time.

Trump cites assassination attempt against him and threats against RFK Jr

Addressing supporters, Trump recounted his narrow escape from an assassination attempt during a Pennsylvania rally in July when a would-be assassin's bullet pierced his ear.

"Soon after I was, I can't even believe I have to say this, nearly assassinated in Pennsylvania last month, Bobby called me to express his best wishes,"  the real estate mogul said, referring to Kennedy, as per Mediaite.

"He knows firsthand the risks incurred by leaders who stand up to the corrupt political establishment," Trump continued.

The MAGA spearhead noted that Kennedy also lost his father, Robert F Kennedy, and his uncle, former president Kennedy, in 1968 and 1963 during their service to the US.

"Bobby himself was subject to repeated threats to his safety during the course of his campaign while being denied protection by the Harris-Biden administration," Trump said. It was only after the failed assassination attempt targetting Trump that President Joe Biden ordered Secret Service protection for Kennedy, who was denied the same earlier despite requests.

"And this is a tribute; in honor of Bobby, I am announcing tonight that upon my election, I will establish a new independent presidential commission on assassination attempts. And they will be tasked with releasing all of the remaining documents pertaining to the assassination of President John F Kennedy," the former president added.

During his presidency, Trump bragged that he would release all documents related to President Kennedy's assassination. However, in 2018, he announced that materials that must remain classified won't be released as they could harm the US national security.

The 35th president was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald while he was in a presidential motorcade in Dallas, Texas.

Internet calls out Trump for not releasing JFK files earlier

Weighing in on Trump's vow to create a commission on the assassination that would be responsible for releasing the remaining JFK files, netizens criticizingly noted that the ex-president made similar unfulfilled promises earlier.

"Except he already had the chance to release them but didn't do it," a user said.

"Didn’t he promise to release them before?" another asked.

"He said this last time. And yet never released it all," added a third user.

"He already was supposed to and did not! lol," read a fourth response.

"This is the same guy who willingly blocked the release of countless JFK documents back in 2017 for the same reasons all the other pro-obscurantism types have. Imagine thinking he has somehow changed his mind," someone else chimed in.

"It's like it's 2016 all over again," an individual remarked.

"Trump had 4 years to do this. Why didn’t he? Can you say 'con job?'" another user wrote.

"LOL. Why didn’t Trump do this when he promised to… when he was actually president?" read one remark.
