Trump’s Beijing welcome sparks protocol buzz as China sends higher-ranking greeter than 2017 visit
BEIJING, CHINA: President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, May 13, to a carefully staged red-carpet welcome that immediately sparked debate over what China may have been indicating through diplomatic protocol during the high-stakes visit.
While Chinese President Xi Jinping did not personally greet Trump on the tarmac, experts say the reception was still noticeably elevated compared to the president’s last trip to China in 2017.
Instead of a lower-ranking official, Beijing sent Vice President Han Zheng along with senior foreign affairs officials and ambassadors to welcome Trump as he stepped off Air Force One.
Experts say China’s greeting for Donald Trump was ‘quite revealing’
Isabelle Vladoiu, founder of the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights, said the airport reception revealed more than many people may initially realize.
“It’s actually quite revealing from a protocol perspective,” Vladoiu said while discussing Trump’s arrival in Beijing.
“Xi Jinping did not personally greet Trump at the airport in 2017 either, but this time Beijing noticeably upgraded the reception by sending Vice President Han Zheng along with both ambassadors and senior foreign affairs officials,” she explained.
According to Vladoiu, the comparison between Trump’s 2017 visit and the current reception is important because rank and symbolism matter heavily in Chinese diplomatic customs.
Trump’s previous visit to China nine years ago reportedly featured a much lower-ranking official greeting him on arrival.
“In Chinese diplomatic protocol, rank is never accidental,” Vladoiu said.
“In 2017, Trump was greeted by Yang Jiechi, who was a senior official and state councilor but not of a higher rank than the vice president. China is signaling, therefore, that this visit carries greater strategic and geopolitical weight than before,” she added.
Donald Trump arrives with Elon Musk and Jensen Huang
Trump’s arrival in Beijing was also notable because of the powerful business figures traveling alongside him.
The president landed aboard Air Force One with an all-star entourage that included Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as well as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, whose AI chip company has become one of the most valuable businesses in the world.
Their presence added another layer of intrigue to the visit as trade, technology, and economic tensions continue shaping relations between Washington and Beijing.
The airport ceremony itself was designed with dramatic visuals.
Trump was welcomed by a military band, an honor guard, and hundreds of young performers waving American and Chinese flags while singing a welcome message in sync with the music.
The spectacle appeared to leave an impression on the president.
Body language expert Dr Lillian Glass said Trump looked “emotional and visibly moved” while greeting the crowd with his trademark fist pumps during the ceremony.
Trade, fentanyl, and Iran expected to dominate talks
Before departing Washington, Trump said he expected discussions with Xi Jinping to center largely on trade relations between the two countries.
However, several other sensitive issues are also expected to come up during the summit, including illicit fentanyl exports entering the United States and the ongoing American conflict involving Iran.
Despite growing concerns surrounding the situation in the Middle East, Trump downplayed suggestions that Iran would dominate the talks.
