WASHINGTON, DC: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered one of her sharpest assessments yet President Donald Trump this week, accusing him of maintaining an "enemies list that would put Nixon's to shame," calling the level of corruption in his administration "out in plain view" and saying a segment of his supporters would "literally go follow him off the cliff."

Clinton made the remarks in an interview that circulated widely, discussing Trump's political opponents, the Electoral College and Democratic turnout ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Hillary Clinton calls Trump administration corruption 'not even being hidden anymore'

On the administration's conduct, Clinton was unsparing.

"He has, like, an enemies list that would put Nixon's to shame," she said, noting that she herself remains on it.

"That never ends," she added. "But the level of corruption, political and financial corruption, is not even being hidden anymore. It is out in plain view."

Clinton said the midterm elections represent the primary avenue for Democrats to respond.

"Perhaps the midterm elections will at least put the Democrats in a position to try to do something about it," she said. "But these people are unleashed and unhinged."

Hillary Clinton says Trump supporters could 'follow him off the cliff'

Turning to the political landscape ahead of November, Clinton estimated that roughly a third of the American electorate represents a hardened base of Trump supporters that Democrats are unlikely to reach.

"There is a hardcore. It's about 34, 35% of the electorate who are literally going to follow him off the cliff," she said, but she quickly shifted to what she described as the more important question.

"But will they show up? How enthusiastic will they be?"

Clinton expressed optimism about Democratic turnout, pointing to election results over the past 18 months.

"As I look at the elections that we've held in the last year and a half, Democratic turnout is much higher," she said. "If we get a good turnout, a good midterm turnout, I feel very good about our chances."

Hillary Clinton renews call to abolish the Electoral College

Clinton also revisited one of her longstanding positions, calling for the abolition of the Electoral College and noting she had first made that argument publicly in 2000.

"When I won my Senate race and Al Gore won the popular vote and lost the Electoral College, that's the first time I said this is, you know, this needs to go," she said.

"We shouldn't be hanging on to an anachronism that was designed for slave-owning states, really."

Clinton won the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election by nearly three million votes but lost to Trump through the Electoral College. Since then, she has frequently criticized the system, arguing that it does not reflect the popular vote.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, Clinton has not said whether she plans to campaign for Democratic candidates.
