WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump transformed the White House into a temporary IndyCar pit lane on Monday, July 13, watching a racing crew complete a lightning-fast 6.5-second pit stop as officials unveiled the upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a marquee event planned as part of the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations.

Video from the event showed an IndyCar crew rapidly changing all four tires and refueling a race car outside the White House as Trump looked on alongside drivers, team owners, and senior administration officials.

The demonstration, which took just 6.5 seconds, highlighted the speed and precision of professional motorsports ahead of the inaugural race in Washington, DC.

The White House event featured a race car positioned on the South Lawn driveway, where mechanics performed a live pit stop before Trump. The president also received a custom racing helmet bearing the presidential seal and posed with drivers and crew members following the demonstration.

The showcase was held to promote the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, an IndyCar race scheduled for Aug. 22-23, 2026, as part of the nationwide America 250 celebrations commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The race will feature a temporary street circuit through downtown Washington, DC, with parts of Pennsylvania Avenue and the roads surrounding the National Mall expected to serve as sections of the course.

Speaking during the event, Trump described the race as "an awesome display of American patriotism and raw horsepower and ingenuity," saying it would celebrate both American engineering and the nation's milestone anniversary.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who attended the event, credited Trump with helping make the race possible after earlier proposals failed to gain approval. Organizers said the event is expected to attract thousands of spectators and generate significant tourism for the capital.

Event sparks excitement and criticism

Supporters praised the White House demonstration as a unique way to spotlight American motorsports and build excitement for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.

However, the planned race has also drawn criticism from some local officials and residents concerned about road closures, traffic disruptions, and security challenges associated with hosting a major motorsports event near federal buildings and national monuments.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is among several large-scale events planned under the Trump administration's Freedom 250 initiative, which aims to commemorate America's semiquincentennial through sporting events, military displays, and cultural celebrations across the country.

The White House pit stop demonstration quickly gained traction on social media, with videos of the crew completing the four-tire change and refueling in just 6.5 seconds circulating widely online and giving viewers a preview of the high-speed action expected when IndyCar returns to the nation's capital next month.
