MAGA supporters call for Walmart boycott after heiress Christy Walton funds ‘No Kings’ anti-Trump ad

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Walmart is facing online backlash after a full-page ad linked to billionaire philanthropist and heiress of Walmart, Christy Walton, was widely interpreted as a thinly veiled critique of President Donald Trump and his "Make America Great Again" rhetoric.
The ad, tied to the upcoming “No Kings Day” on June 14, which is also Trump's birthday, Flag Day, and the 250th anniversary of the US Army, urged Americans to honor alliances, reject dictators, and engage in civic discourse. While it didn’t mention Trump by name, many saw it as a pointed political statement that has reignited tensions in an already polarized climate.

Walmart faces backlash after Christy Walton funded a 'No Kings' protest ad
A right-wing account on X, formerly Twitter, is urging MAGA supporters to boycott Walmart following reports that Christy Walton funded an ad promoting the upcoming “No Kings” protests.
On Monday, June 9, the account Libs of Chicago shared an image of a full-page advertisement that ran in The New York Times in March. The ad, reportedly paid for by Walton, the widow of John T Walton (son of Walmart founder Sam Walton), calls for civic engagement and resistance to authoritarianism.
Libs of Chicago criticized the ad and Walton’s involvement, writing: “One of the ppl funding the socialist movement is Christy Ruth Walton who is a stake holder of @Walmart. Sort of ironic isn’t it? A Walton married a socialist. If there was ever a time to boycott Walmart, it’s now.”

The ad included, "WE honor our commitments and stand by our allies, WE defend against aggression by dictators, WE respect our neighbors and trading partners."
"We are the people of the United States of America,” the ad declared. “The honor, dignity, and integrity of our country are not for sale… Our government is of the people, by the people, for the people.”
The protest it supports is scheduled for Saturday and is widely seen as a rebuke of President Donald Trump, as per Independent. The 'No Kings Day' ad did not reference any political party or mention any specific political leader by name.
Donald Trump supporters urge boycott of Walmart
The advertisement has ignited strong backlash from Donald Trump supporters, with some urging a boycott of Walmart.
Kari Lake, a senior adviser at the US Agency for Global Media and a prominent Trump ally, posted a photo of the ad on X (formerly Twitter), asking her followers, “Do you shop at Walmart?”
Meanwhile, Florida Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna also weighed in, commenting on X: “Looks like the Walmart dynasty is big mad about China Tariffs."

Walmart distances itself from Christy Walton's ad amid boycott calls
As backlash and boycott calls from Donald Trump supporters intensify over Christy Walton's involvement in the "No Kings Day" protest ad, Walmart has publicly clarified its position.
A spokesperson for the company told Newsweek, “The advertisements from Christy Walton are in no way connected to or endorsed by Walmart. She does not serve on the board or play any role in decision making at Walmart."

Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible—one of the groups organizing the "No Kings Day" event—explained that the protest's purpose is to affirm the principle that the United States "has no kings," a clear reference to concerns about authoritarian leadership.
Commenting on the controversy, Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group and host of the 9innings podcast, noted, “The backlash is strictly political as some see this as an affront to their own personally held beliefs. Still, However, the statements in question fall under constitutionally protected rights—namely, freedom of speech and the ability to engage in civil discourse."
Despite the calls for a boycott, some experts believe the practical impact on Walmart’s bottom line will be limited. Financial educator Alex Beene pointed out that Walmart's affordability makes it an essential retailer for many.
“At the end of the day, millions of Americans rely on big box retailers for many everyday items, either because it's the cheapest option in their town or potentially even the only one for certain goods,” he said. “In other words, your mileage may vary on who will actually boycott depending on location and support for the president."
