WASHINGTON, DC: As Americans ring in the New Year, the nation’s capital will also mark the beginning of a historic milestone, with the Washington Monument transforming into what organizers are calling the 'world’s tallest birthday candle' to signal the start of the United States’ 250th year.

The large-scale illumination debuted on New Year’s Eve, December 31, with projections beginning at 7 PM Eastern Standard Time and continuing just after midnight. The display will run through Monday, featuring different themed projections each evening that trace America’s journey from its earliest days to its future.

Washington Monument becomes centerpiece of America’s 250th celebrations

According to Freedom 250, the national organization spearheading the event, the monument will glow with narrated visuals depicting discovery, the American Revolution, westward expansion, the Industrial Revolution, and modern America.

The towering obelisk will also symbolically become a 250-foot birthday candle, serving as a visual countdown to 2026, the year the nation marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

“The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation, 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence,” said Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, in a press release. “We invite every American and every friend of America, to join this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit.”

Freedom 250’s role in planning the semiquincentennial

Freedom 250 is a national, nonpartisan organization created by President Donald Trump with the goal of coordinating and leading major commemorative events tied to the nation’s semiquincentennial. The group is working alongside the White House and multiple federal agencies to plan celebrations that extend well beyond Washington, DC.

Organizers described the Washington Monument display as the 'first signature moment' in a multi-year series of events designed to reflect on the nation’s founding while looking toward its future.

The New Year’s Eve program will also include a drone and fireworks show, adding to the visual spectacle in the capital.

Free public viewing and extended projection schedule

The event is free and open to the public, with projections scheduled nightly through Monday. While the New Year’s Eve display will run later into the night, projections on subsequent evenings will be shown from 7 PM to 10 PM Eastern Standard Time.

Testing for the event began earlier in December, with previews of the visuals briefly visible on the monument, offering a glimpse of what organizers say will be one of the most ambitious projection displays in the landmark’s history.

More nationwide events planned for America’s 250th birthday

Freedom 250 has also announced additional large-scale events planned for 2026, including a Great American State Fair scheduled for June and a parade of ships from more than 30 countries set to sail through New York Harbor on the Fourth of July.

Meanwhile, America250, the nonpartisan commission created by Congress in 2016 to prepare for the anniversary, is also marking the occasion on New Year’s Eve in New York City.

The commission announced that, after midnight Eastern Standard Time, the iconic Times Square Ball will be illuminated in red, white and blue, followed by the release of 2,000 pounds of matching confetti.
