WASHINGTON, DC: Ilhan Omar's controversial 9/11 remark has resurfaced on social media.

The US representative from Minnesota’s 5th district said, “Far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen, and frankly, I’m tired of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it.”

She made the remarks during a speech at a banquet for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights organization, in 2019.

“CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” Omar added, per Vox.

What was Ilhan Omar's controversial speech about?

The congresswoman was emphasizing the need for organizations such as CAIR to ensure that Muslims writ large aren’t punished for the actions of a few extremists on 9/11.

Omar went on to share the reason her family decided to move to the US, “As an American member of Congress, I have to make sure I live up to the ideals of fighting for liberty and justice — those are very much rooted in the reason why my family came here.”

However, she was slammed by several Republican leaders, including Dan Crenshaw, who then tweeted, "First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as 'some people who did something'. Unbelievable."

Internet slams Ilhan Omar over her controversial remark on 9/11 attack

Netizens criticized Rep Ilhan Omar on the 9/11 anniversary, over her comment "some people did something." A few asked for action against her, suggesting deportation to Somalia.

A user expressed, "Ilhan Omar called 9/11 some people did something! My mother spent the last hour of her life like this so when those people do something they really do something!"

"'Some people did something' - Ilhan Omar in reference to 9/11. How has this t*rr*rist sympathizer not been expelled from Congress yet?" the second wrote.

Another expressed, "She should have never been allowed to run for office in the first place."

"She hasn't been removed because her party keeps bringing her fresh voters from outside the country," another took a jibe at Democrats.

"She has to be deported back to Somalia," one wrote. "And we need to do something; send her back to where she came from," one person reacted to Omar's remark

An individual expressed, "Minimizing 9/11 like that is a disgrace. Congress should be holding higher standards, not letting this slide."
