FULTON COUNTY, GEORGIA: On February 6, Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) initiated an ethics complaint against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D).

Greene accused the Georgia prosecutor of neglecting to disclose 'luxury vacations' she had taken with Nathan Wade, a prominent prosecutor in former President Trump’s Georgia criminal case, with whom she admitted to having a 'personal relationship'.

Ethics complaint against Fani Willis raises questions about jurisdiction and substance

As per The Hill, The four-page ethics complaint, dated Tuesday and submitted to the Georgia State Ethics Commission, contends that Willis violated the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Act by failing to disclose 'suspicious relationships and transactions' she had with Wade.

While the commission does review issues such as failure to file disclosure reports, which Greene alleges against Willis, it may not have the authority to delve into the substance of her complaint.

Specifically, the commission's mandate does not extend to investigating the ethical or moral conduct of candidates, lobbyists, or public officers, nor does it encompass the review of the misuse of state or local funds.

The crux of Greene's complaint revolves around allegations stemming from a co-defendant of former President Trump, Mike Roman. Roman filed motions seeking to disqualify Willis from a significant racketeering and election interference case.

Among his allegations were claims that Willis and another individual, Wade, had traveled together to various 'traditional vacation destinations', including the Caribbean and Napa Valley.

Greene's ethics complaint accuses Willis of financial impropriety

Greene, a staunch supporter of Trump, argued that the payment of around $700,000 received by Wade for his involvement in the Trump case qualifies him as an 'authority of the state'. Consequently, she implied that Willis should disclose any financial transactions between them.

However, the legislation she refers to mandates public officials to divulge payments solely for activities such as speaking engagements, seminars, or discussions directly pertinent to their official responsibilities.

Willis's office refrained from providing a comment on the morning of February 8. Both individuals addressed Roman's accusations against them earlier this month, some of which Greene included in the complaint.

They stated that their association commenced after Wade's recruitment and admitted that the financial burden for personal travel expenses is shared approximately equally between them.

Greene insinuated that Willis behaved improperly by not disclosing her share of expenses incurred as a couple.

According to the complaint, "On information and belief, Fani Willis received compensation for travel from her secret boyfriend and special prosecutor, Nathan Wade, to vacation on a luxury Caribbean cruise and a visit to Napa Valley. These disclosures would have allowed the public to discover her inappropriate relationship with her secret boyfriend and special prosecutor Nathan Wade, which has illegally tainted her already spurious prosecution against former President Trump and 18 co-defendants."

However, Willis's office refuted this argument in a previous court filing.

"Fulton County prosecutors emphasized in a filing, 'To be absolutely clear, the personal relationship between Special Prosecutor Wade and District Attorney Willis has never involved direct or indirect financial benefit to District Attorney Willis.'"

Furthermore, Willis has characterized the motion as "salacious" and "designed to obtain" media attention in court filings.
