WHCD suspect Cole Allen came from a high-achieving family led by his church-leader father
TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA: Cole Thomas Allen, the man accused of opening fire at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on April 25, is being described as coming from a high-achieving family, with relatives expressing shock over his alleged actions and extremist views.
The 31-year-old, who authorities say attempted to target Donald Trump and other administration officials, had been living with his parents in Torrance, California.
Investigators are now examining his background, writings, and online activity as part of a broader probe into the motive behind the incident.
Cole Allen's family reacts to shocking manifesto allegations
Allen’s family members were reportedly alarmed after his alleged manifesto surfaced, revealing anti-Trump rhetoric and violent intent.
His sister recounted his “radical” statements to federal investigators, while his brother contacted police after receiving a disturbing message from him on the day of the attack.
Relatives and those close to the family have described them as private and academically driven, making the allegations against Allen all the more unexpected. Public records also show that his father held a leadership role at a local church, which declined to comment following the incident.
Allen’s siblings also have strong academic and professional records.
His brother studied engineering and pursued a career in maritime design, while one of his sisters studied journalism and statistics before working in research. Another sibling focused on physics and later joined a scientific research institution.
The family’s background as accomplished scholars has added to the shock surrounding the case, as investigators work to understand how Allen’s alleged views developed.
Cole Allen’s academic and professional background revealed
Allen graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2017 with an engineering degree and later earned a master’s in computer science.
He was employed at a tutoring and test-preparation company, where he was recognized as “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024.
In addition to his academic career, Allen explored interests in technology and gaming, releasing a video game on the platform Steam in 2018.
A former student described him as “a completely average guy,” adding that there were no visible signs that suggested violent tendencies, the New York Times reported.
Manifesto raises motive questions
Authorities are closely reviewing a manifesto allegedly written by Allen, which includes strong accusations against the president and ideological justifications for violence. The document also contains references to his family and religious beliefs, raising further questions about his motivations.
