WASHINGTON, DC: Leave it to Donald Trump to turn a quiet tree-planting ceremony into a MAGA moment.

On Tuesday, April 8, the president rolled up his sleeves to plant a new “MAGAnolia” sapling on the White House lawn, replacing the historic Jackson Magnolia that had stood for nearly 200 years.

The White House dropped the photos and a slick video montage of Trump digging the hole himself and planting the fresh young tree. According to the official press release, this 12-year-old sapling is a “direct descendant” of the iconic Jackson Magnolia, cultivated specifically for this occasion in the National Park Service’s greenhouse.

In a rather Trumpian branding, the new tree was officially dubbed the “MAGAnolia”—a nod to his signature “Make America Great Again” slogan.

Mainstream media was not given access to film the moment, but the White House shared a clip for the fans. Trump declared, “We have a beautiful tree now at the White House.”

Farewell to a historic fixture

The original tree wasn’t just any magnolia. The Jackson Magnolia was a fixture of the South Portico, witnessing generations of ceremonial welcomes, presidential arrivals, and historic photo ops, per USA Today.

Trump announced the removal of the aging icon on March 30, calling it a “very dangerous safety hazard” that needed to be dealt with.

“This was at the White House Entrance, no less,” he warned, defending the decision to take it down.

According to the National Park Service, “folklore tells us” that President Andrew Jackson brought seeds from his Tennessee home and planted them in honor of his late wife, Rachel.

Sadly, the tree’s fate had been uncertain for years. A consulting arborist, Peter Hart, declared it “structurally unsound” and no longer suitable as a historic or aesthetic landmark.

The Park Service is holding on to part of the original tree for archival purposes. For the remaining wood, Trump teased that it “may be used for other high and noble purposes!!!!”

The original tree was also damaged in 1994 when a rogue Cessna plane crash-landed on the South Lawn and skidded into the White House. It also had a major pruning back in 2017.

Longtime groundskeeper Dale Haney, who’s been on the job for over half a century, was also there for the symbolic ceremony.

“Dale’s been here 53 years. He’s fantastic,” Trump praised.

Donald Trump sparks Internet buzz with 'MAGAnolia'

Many on social media appreciated the "MAGAnolia" wordplay.

"MAGAnolia trees are beautiful," one posted on X.

"MAGAnolia…excellent word mashup! love it!" another wrote.

"We have 3 of those trees in our Texas backyard except I didn't know til now they were MAGAnolias!" someone else quipped.

"That dude who used to work at McDonalds, then drove a garbage truck for a while, is now doing landscaping, that dude hustles!" a comment read.

"Bro we’re in the biggest tariff war in history and you’re planting trees," another laughed.

While Donald Trump was busy planting his MAGAnolia, global markets were having a total meltdown thanks to him. Over the weekend, sweeping 10% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration went into effect, and the world economy was buckling under their weight.

Tariff rates skyrocketed with the White House slapping new costs on goods from 57 countries and regions. Chinese products are now facing a jaw-dropping 104% tariff. Other numbers are just as brutal: 20% for the European Union, 26% for India, and 49% for Cambodia.

Meanwhile, London’s FTSE 100 nosedived by 2.2% just after opening, while Germany’s DAX plummeted 2.3%. France’s CAC 40 dropped 2.4%, and Spain’s Ibex fell by 2% according to The Guardian.
