WASHINGTON, DC: Former Republican vice president Mike Pence, along with former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, were booed by the MAGA crowd gathered at the Capitol One Arena for Donald Trump's presidential inauguration on Monday, January 20.

The swearing-in ceremony was moved indoors for the first time in 40 years because of freezing temperatures, reported the Daily Mail.

As such, thousands of Trump followers who had arrived at the national capital to watch the ceremony from the National Mall were relocated to the Capital One Arena, where the Washington Capitals and Wizards play.

Donald Trump was sworn in inside the Capitol Rotunda, in the presence of public officials and invited guests, which included VIPs like Tim Cook, Dana White, and Tucker Carlson.

While those present inside the Rotunda warmly welcomed Pence, Obama, and the Clintons, the crowd watching the event from the Capital One Arena was clearly less enthusiastic about their presence at the ceremony.

The Democrats, Clintons, and Obama were loudly booed when they showed up on screens entering the Rotunda. Trump's 2016 rival Hillary even received the infamous chants of "lock her up".

"Lock her up", was one of the constant refrains of Trump’s presidential campaign against Hillary in 2016. Trump has frequently slammed Hillary's record as secretary of state and vowed to put her in prison.

However, former Trump VP Pence received a similar treatment. According to Newsweek, Pence had angered MAGA after he refused to help Trump overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election after the latter was defeated by Joe Biden.

Pence further declined to endorse Trump in the 2024 presidential election, stating, "Donald Trump is pursuing and articulating an agenda that is at odds with the conservative agenda that we governed during our four years. And that's why I cannot in good conscience endorse Donald Trump in this campaign."

Internet lauds Clintons, Barack Obama and Mike Pence for showing up

Netizens reacting to clips of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Mike Pence getting booed by MAGA supporters while attending Donald Trump's inauguration accused the crowd of being "petty".

"That was petty. They did show up. I didn't think they would," wrote a person.

"People need to show respect," shared another.

"The Clintons knew it was coming. Kudos for subjecting themselves to the duty," observed another.

"I am surprised they showed up. They almost get my respect for doing this. Obama swaggered in like he owned the place," quipped one user.

"The booing was a disgrace. This was not a sporting event, but a ritual of American democracy. The former presidents should have been treated with respect," noted another.
