Why was Elaine Chao in China during Mitch McConnell's hospitalization? Her team explains
WASHINGTON, DC: Elaine Chao has issued a statement after returning to the United States from China, where she had been traveling while her husband, Senator Mitch McConnell, recovered from a recent hospitalization.
The former Transportation Secretary's trip drew attention after McConnell was hospitalized on June 14, prompting questions and speculation online about why Chao remained overseas during the health scare.
Her team has now pushed back against those concerns, saying the senator's condition did not require her immediate return.
Elaine Chao's team says Mitch McConnell's condition did not require urgent return
A spokesperson for Chao addressed the situation in a statement provided to The Courier Journal, explaining that her visit to China had been scheduled well before McConnell's hospitalization.
"The secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family's philanthropic endeavors," the spokesperson said.
The statement also noted that Chao met with several people during the trip, including the US ambassador.
"During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the US ambassador. The senator's health did not warrant an immediate return to the US," the spokesperson added.
The clarification came after Chao's travel became the subject of online discussion following news of McConnell's hospitalization.
China visit drew attention after photograph surfaced during trip
Interest in the trip intensified after the Chinese embassy in Washington released a photograph on June 17 showing Chao seated beside Chinese Vice President Han Zheng.
The image showed the two officials sitting in front of a large painting of the Great Wall in Beijing and quickly circulated online as attention remained focused on McConnell's health.

Chao, who served as Transportation Secretary during President Donald Trump's first term and previously led the Labor Department under President George W Bush, has been married to McConnell for decades.
According to reports, she left for China on June 12, two days before McConnell was hospitalized.
While questions continued to swirl around the timing of the trip, Chao's team maintained that the visit had been planned in advance and that there was no need for her to cut it short.
Questions remain as family stays largely quiet
Although Chao has now returned to the United States, her staff did not indicate whether she had been in contact with McConnell since coming home.
The lack of additional details has kept public attention on the situation, especially as discussion surrounding the senator's health continues.
At the same time, another development added to the speculation-filled news cycle. According to reports, McConnell's youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, deleted her account on X.
No explanation was provided for the move, but it came as online conversations about the senator and his family continued to gain traction.
