WASHINGTON, DC: On Thursday, February 1, Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia introduced a resolution denouncing Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota for "admitting she's working as a foreign agent for a foreign country."

A video of Rep. Omar speaking to Somali American constituents during an event in Minneapolis went viral on X, (formerly Twitter), which incited a backlash against the Muslim and Somali American lawmaker.

As per the interpretation of her initial statements on X provided by Somaliland's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Rhoda J Elmi, Omar allegedly stated that she was "Somalian first, Muslim second" and that she was "here to protect the interests of Somalia from inside the U.S. system."

What did Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resolution entail?

Rep. Greene posted a video on X explaining the resolution she introduced with the caption, “Today, I’m introducing a Censure Resolution on Ilhan Omar for admitting she’s working as a foreign agent for a foreign country. I urge my colleagues to vote to Censure, but I wish I had the votes to expel and deport her.”

She said in the video, "Today I introduced a censure resolution against Ilhan Omar. And the reason why I did that, and I'll just say this censure is not going far enough. If it were up to me, we would expel Ilhan Omar and deport her out of the United States. Her comments are outrageous. She's acting as a foreign agent within our very government."

During her speech, Omar made comments regarding the recent agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, which granted Ethiopia access to the sea using Somaliland's ports, per a report by Newsweek.

She also remarked on the disputed territories Somalia shares with its neighboring countries, by saying, "As Somalis, one day we will go after our missing territories."

Despite the controversy surrounding her remarks, Omar later defended them, claiming that the translation of her words in the viral clip was incorrect.

Rep. Omar tweeted, “It’s not only slanted but completely off, but I wouldn’t expect more from these propagandists. I pray for them and for their sanity. No nation-state can survive if its states start to get involved in land lease negotiations with other countries without the consent of the federal government. Somalis in Somalia and in the diaspora are united in that effort and I stand in solidarity with them. No amount of harassment and lies will ever change that.”

According to an alternative translation, Omar emphasized the unity and solidarity of Somalis and Muslims, stating that she would make it her mission to protect Somalia's territorial integrity and prevent other countries from exploiting its resources.

Per that translation, she had said, "While I am in Congress, no one will take Somalia's sea. The United States will not back others to rob us. So, do not lose sleep over that."

Internet slams Marjorie Taylor Greene

People on X lambasted the Georgia Republican for proposing resolutions that don't see the light of day even in a GOP-led House of Representatives.

One X user remarked, "Do you do any REAL legislation? Why about something other than revenge and hate?"

"Ilhan Omar has been a target for Maga GOP since what seems like forever. Their racist roots run deep," another user said.

Another user asked, "You wish you had the votes to deport a US citizen??? How do you think this works exactly?"

One user stated, "You can’t deport a US citizen. You’re an embarrassment …"

"Other than filling articles of impeachment, what have you actually accomplished, that you can successfully campaign on? You are such a waste of money and office space," another X user remarked.

One user tweeted, "This woman doesn't do anything in congress."
