10 celebs who debunked wild conspiracy theories about themselves
Rumors and gossip about celebrities are common, but occasionally they get out of control when it comes to A-listers' personal lives. Fans of these tales somehow discover proof to back up their views, which then develop into full-fledged conspiracy theories. Some of the theories suggest that well-known celebs have been killed and replaced with clones, while others cast doubt on the paternity of famous families. Here are 10 celebs who had no choice but to speak out when they became targets of bizarre conspiracy theories:
1. Kate Middleton
The constant speculations surrounding the British royal family hit a new high in January of this year, following Kate Middleton's hospitalization. While some made jokes about a botched plastic surgery procedure, others thought she had been killed. The Princess of Wales eventually put an end to the rumors when she revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer. In March, she shared, "It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment."

Avril Lavigne's fans have long conjectured that the singer died long ago and was replaced by a lookalike actress, Melissa Vandella. During her recent appearance on the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast, Lavigne addressed the speculations, saying, "There is a conspiracy theory that I’m not me... I feel like I got a good one. I don’t think it’s negative or anything creepy, so it’s like, we’re good … Obviously, I am me, it’s so dumb."
3. Lea Michele
Rumors have been going around for years that 'Glee' actress Lea Michele doesn't know how to read. 'One More Thing' podcast hosts first made light of her alleged dislike of improvising scenes in 2017 by joking that she was unable to stray from the scripted lines she had learned. Even Michele herself joined in on the fun, replying to tweets about the claims, but soon things got out of control. In an interview with The New York Times, she clarified, "I went to Glee every single day. I knew my lines every single day. And then there’s a rumor online that I can’t read or write? It’s sad."
4. Lady Gaga
Conspiracy theories claiming Lady Gaga was transgender or intersex emerged while she was in the early stages of her career. The persistent accusations didn't affect Gaga in the slightest, and when questioned in an interview if she had male genitalia, she responded, "Maybe I do. Would it be so terrible? Why the hell am I gonna waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis. My fans don’t care and neither do I."
5. Taylor Swift
Rumors have long circulated that Taylor Swift had dated several of her female friends—including Diana Agron and Karlie Kloss—in secret. The pop star's representatives referred to the reports that she had been spotted kissing Karlie at a concert in 2014 as "crap." Swift herself took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the claim, writing, "As my 25th birthday present from the media, I'd like for you to stop accusing all my friends of dating me. #thirsty."
6. Paul McCartney
Conspiracy theories claiming Paul McCartney died in a car accident and was replaced by a doppelganger have been around since the 1960s. The rumors continued for over 50 years until McCartney finally addressed them during a 'Carpool Karaoke' episode. The singer expressed his thoughts by saying, "We just kind of let it go... The Beatles, there were millions of legends and so we just kind of let them go, you know, there wasn’t really any way you could stop it."
7. Jamie Foxx
When Jamie Foxx was hospitalized in April 2023 due to a medical complication, no one knew what happened to the Oscar-winning actor. The secrecy surrounding his medical condition has given rise to several conspiracy theories. Foxx later batted down a particular rumor whereby fans assumed that he had actually died and been replaced by a clone. He reportedly remarked, "You know, it’s crazy, I couldn’t do that six months ago -- I couldn’t actually walk. I’m not a clone, I’m not a clone. I know a lot of people who were saying I was cloned out there," per Page Six.
8. Khloe Kardashian
Conspiracy theories claiming Khloe Kardashian is not biologically connected to her sisters have been leveled at her throughout her life. Rumors claim Khloe's biological father is OJ Simpson, not Robert Kardashian, the first husband of Kris Jenner. Khloe addressed the rumors in an episode of 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians', noting, "My dad is Robert Kardashian. My other dad is [Caitlyn] Jenner. I don’t need someone to tell me who my family is. I have had the blessing of having two phenomenal fathers. I don't need a DNA test to prove who my father is."
9. Louis Tomlinson
Rumors about a romantic relationship dogged former One Direction members Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. The idea that they were secretly dating was popularized by fans, who called the alleged couple "Larry Stylinson." The conspiracy theory went so far as to claim that Tomlinson's son, Freddie, didn't exist. Talking to Brazilian magazine G1, Tomlinson said, "I realized a few years ago that there is nothing I can say, there is nothing I can do to stop those who believe in this conspiracy."
10. Mindy Kaling
Fans have conjectured about the paternity of Mindy Kaling's two children ever since she welcomed them. While Kaling has not acknowledged her children's paternity, many assumed that her ex-boyfriend and former 'The Office' co-star BJ Novak, is the father. In response to the conspiracy theories, Kaling said that Novak plays a significant role in her children's lives and that the speculations don't worry them. "It doesn't bother me. He's the godparent to both my kids -- and they have such a great relationship," told the actress to Marie Claire.
